Hi All
After building 2 tanks the Panther and the stug I have used UPol acid etch 8 in spray cans.
These cost about £12.00 each here in the UK.
I have found you need about 4 -5 cans per tank about £60.00 say.
After a trip to the local car paint mixing shop (Morrelies) I found that they can do it by the Litre for use in a spray gun.
This works out at about £30.00 per litre, Now that should be enough for at least 2 more tanks.
So this is the way to go for me.
Derek

Re: Etch primer by the litre
Worth a try. How do you clean etch primer from the gun. Can you thin it? Paul Morris recently mentioned an alternative to upol brand at a cheaper price.

Hi Fellas.
I originally mentioned this on the Berg build but thought I would follow Derek's thread.
I have been using an etch primer that I have found to be a good alternative to Upol acid 8 and quite a bit cheaper at under £8.00p!! I have found it to be just as good as the Upol in my opinion. here are your details.
Autotek
Professional.
Etch primer.
500 m.l. can with a much better than normal nozzle giving results far closer to a full sized gun . . . in my opinion.
The shop is local to me and I went in the ask if they would deliver and they will, so here are the details you will need.

Morecambe.

Hope this helps out, like I say I like it and they are pretty helpful in the shop, but they do not mix paint at all . . . but from the same range you can get grey primer yellow high build as seen on my models red lead black and white gloss.
Cheers Paul

Re: Etch primer by the litre
Got 12 cans of pauls etch primer through ebay. £54 for 12 cans. Even including international postage it is a good saving. Might spray another tiger at the weekend to test quality.

Re: Etch primer by the litre
I bought some Etch Primer from a local car paint supplier at £11 per litre and sprayed the whole of the Diamond T and Trailer and used about half of it. Used a medium sized spray gun not an airbrush. You can use it an airbrush but you will have to use odinary celloluse thinners with it. Certainly a lot cheaper than Upol. I will be using it on the Tiger which hopefully I am about to start.

Re: Etch primer by the litre
Hi Derek.
I have not tried it with Cellulose as a top coat, but! I must admit that I did have a problem with it on a recent model that had a gloss top coat so try a test panel first mate .. .. .. better safe than sorry.
Cheers Paul.

Re: Etch primer by the litre
hi derek, if the etch primer is cellulose no problem, the problem arises when oil based paints and cellulose come together, the thinners content in the cellulose paint slightly melts the oil based paint and causes a pickling effect and a reaction, even though you can thin enamel paint with thinners! in the tin, i just stick to celly all the way, etch primer, texture coat, matt finishes, i use those small humbrol enamel tins, water washes, pencils, pigments for the detail, i never seal the model afterwards, i just leave as is, hope this is some help regards simon.

Re: Etch primer by the litre
Hi Paul and Simon
Thanks for the replys.
I have always used the Upol acid 8 with no problems however it is now crept up to nearly £14 a can.
I noticed our local car spares shop now stocks the Autotek etch primer at £7.99 a can
so if it works its half the price.
If no one has tried it with cellulose I will stick with Acid 8.
Derek
