I was doing some maintenance on the Cent BARV and spotted the RH idler was a little loose.

So I removed the hub cap, expecting to have to tighten up the fixing cap.

Nope, still nice and tight.

So I removed the idler completely...

Inner bearing is toast. Some of the ball bearings came out in pieces

Being at the front, idlers on Centurions are very exposed, so I wonder if this model has suffered a front end collision, which damaged the bearing somehow.

I've ordered new SKF bearings, and will replace all four at the front, just in case.

It did ....... a few years ago at REME. Suddenly it ran amok, and repeatedly rammed into the Scammel display stand until we managed to find the kill switch.

Adrian if everything was still tight l doubt it would be collision damage that caused it. probably just a bearing failure. Seen plenty bearing breakups when l was working on bikes.

That was because Nick walked off with the transmitter and left the tank switched on. Though from memory it was trying to reverse into the Scammel, so that wouldn't have affected the idlers. Maybe I need to check the sprockets as well

The BARV has been in the sea , so sand and salt may have got into the bearing and over time caused it to deteriorate to the point of failure.
