IR Detector 3D model
Yesterday came across Steve's query regarding the IR detector (viewtopic.php?t=9952).
Thought it would serve as a good CAD drawing exercise. Like everything in life, one needs to practice to keep one's acquired knowledge. Downloaded all the photos and also the ones that Charles sent via email and will give it a try. No guarantees that it will get finished but at least it has started.

Re: IR Detector 3D model
Some more progress:
Printed with a FDM printer to check parts. Obviously the finer details are lost.

Re: IR Detector 3D model
Hi Vince
That's very fast work on the IR base, a lot of detail and an operating cover, nice.
Chieftain was designed in imperial, so I find a lot of measurements only start to make sense when rounded to the nearest 1/8 of an inch or so.
For info, I have amended my last post on Steve's original IR detector thread to show my take on the dimensions.

Re: IR Detector 3D model
David I downloaded those two images.
I am not sure if I can implement all those changes without breaking the model. I can revert to a previous version if that happens but to be extra careful I am going to make a copy and do the changes on the copy.

Re: IR Detector 3D model
As I suspected, when I started changing dimensions the CAD model broke.
So I started a new model with your dimensions because some looked strange.
The back semicircular piece is shorter. Is that how it should be?

Re: IR Detector 3D model
This is the third and final version of the main body. I don't think it will need more tweaking.
Next I will work on the cable conduit. We will see how that goes. Originally this is all sheet metal but will make it as a solid instead so that it can be easily printed.
I also updated the link to the 3d browser in my first post to reflect the 3rd version.

Re: IR Detector 3D model
Thanks David.
Today's progress. Finished the cable conduit.
One final part to be added. That elbow at the end of the conduit. I have a feeling that this might create problems. We'll see next time.

Re: IR Detector 3D model
Can’t help but admire your work Vince.
Show you a photo, add a dimension (sometimes) and as if by magic you’ve drawn and printed it.
Are you one of those people who can hear a tune then sit at a piano and play it?
Great stuff.

Re: IR Detector 3D model
Final part done.
I think I am calling it done. At the moment it is made up of various parts which can be printed individually and glued together. I can join them together and make it just one part but being long and slender I suspect it would be easier to get broken. Not sure what to do.
