1/6 scale v8 flathead

Post by Medard Winants »

Is there somebody who try to build a 1/6 scale v8 flathead engine into his universal carrier?
I saw this engine on the web and thought that it would be a perfect option to make my carrier more realistic.

You'll need some sort of clutch mechanism. Not certain the existing UC axle would be happy with 3 1/2 HP.

They mention optional cast iron piston rings but don't mention if they use steel or cast iron cylinder liners -an important point to consider.
There's another Asian manufacturer of similar 4cycle multi cylinder engines that initially used either ABC or Al-Si cylinders that I would
have little confidence in for extended wear life.

As many have pointed out to me over the years you'll never attain the throaty sound of the full sized machine with a tiny engine; even
a tiny 4 cycle engine...

Yes I have quite a bit ofexperience with ICE powered models...albeit mostly 2 strokes.

Jerry it’s similar to blank firers - yes they make a bang but nothing like the real thing. Good point.

Make sure you have a good speaker and a quality amp. Like Jerry said you'd have to re-engineer the whole model drive system.
Go EV, like garlic bread, it's the future!
IC power is a nightmare in an enclosure even a just a single cylindered one and that will sound like a lawn mower if your lucky.

There are a lot of fakers on Youtube, check out this clip for the real world.

I know the sound isn’t like the real thing, especially the nitro version the gasoline version sounds better. But that’s with every rc model including the way the models drive versus the real thing. But what I ment was the visual accuracy that also works for real. I think that would be real eye catcher.

I understand what you mean especially if you think there's enough space to fit a scale IC motor.

Check out Phil Woodard's build, "David's carrier build" a fantastic Universal Carrier with a 1/6 scale dummy metal flat head V8 with accessories, none of the downsides of the IC motor.
He's got the look and the flexibility of electrically powered model too.

Hi Medard,

There are some cheaper options. This was done from a very good set of purchasable .stls on Cults and printed on an Ender 5. I have added a bit more detail as always :-)

As its all printed in separate components you could probably modify quite easily to hide a motor.

Best regards

Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your reply. I have a snapmaker artisan so it’s an option indeed.
