Varnish/Laguer

Post by Allan Shannon »

Guys

Been busy with my build and I am doing some painting, then the dreaded Zimmerit! I am wondering what varnish/lacquer do you use to protect the paint? I have tried Autotek matt lacquer which darkens the overall finish and then tried Hycote lacquer which is slightly lighter when applied but still darkish. The Base colour I am using is Tamiya TS 3 dark yellow.

Look forward to the response guys?

Keep Safe Allan

Hi Allen

To be honest I did not use any varnish or lacquer to protect the paint.

You don’t really need a varnish unless you want to create a protective layer over the base coat in order to apply weathering. I use a water based acrylic varnish in rattle cans. I would have recommended the one from Games Workshop which used to be called Purity Seal or now Munitorum Varnish (who thinks up these weird names?) neither seem to be available t the moment.

I see that Vallejo produce a similar varnish and that’s probably the best bet. One tip, don’t apply too thickly or it may silver or frost over. A couple of very light mists is all you need.
