Barrel Recoil

Post by davebane »

Looking at buying a built Tiger to fight my T-34, and wondering if there is a barrel recoil and firing device from Armortek for this? The current tank has a blank firer, and from what I've read, I think I'd rather avoid that? I don't see one listed on the website...

Dave
Keep an eye on Adrian Harris and his work on a recoil mechanism, I hope that he will eventually work out something that can be used on the Tiger. At the open day he demonstrated something that was dead impressive.
All the best

   Thanks for the big up Steve

I have done some work on converting my recoil system to work with a 2003 Mid Tiger. I think I can manage the full 93mm recoil distance but I don't know yet if the servo I have selected is capable of handling the mass of a Tiger barrel.

My other concern is that there is very little in the Tiger gun design which can act as the linear bearing. I have found some PTFE adhesive tape which may help keep the main part of the barrel aligned and free running.

What I don't know yet is whether adding recoil will introduce an unacceptable amount of barrel bounce when the Tiger is on the prowl. :?

I guess I need to get my hull rebuilt to test it all out

Adrian.

At the risk of sounding smug, methinks Armortek are missing a trick here

My soon to be collected Mark-1-Tanks 1/8 Tiger 1 (Late Model) has a pyro gun with full barrel recoil

The barrel has a GRP outer sleeve with a steel inner liner - if people could get over NGS (No Grp Syndrome), then there`s your cake get munching

As they say, go figure

Very nice

Looks just like the LED system on my Tamiya Panther

You seem to have the timing pretty bang (excuse the pun :!: ) on as well

This is another view of my recoil system, Please note the 'white' PTFE bearing allowing a smooth and rigid guide for movement of the barrel. Also note the 'black' plastic bush which acts as a cushioning stop. I recommend the large FUTABA 3306 SERVO , as this has 24kg of torque, essential in moving a large heavy object. You must also power this servo using a 6 VOLT NICAD, 4.8 volt is not powerful enough.

If you cannot get enough recoil movement with an existing Futaba servo arm, here is one that I have found which gives a much longer throw.

Hi Robin

Is there a video of your recoil in action that I missed? Would love to see it. :) Sorry if I simply missed it.

Best regards
Tim

Hi Tim, no video at the moment, but will take one hopefully next week when I have fitted the new longer servo arm. By the way my son lives in Bel Air, is that far from you?

Hi Robin

Thanks. Look forward to the video. :) Bell Air is in Los Angeles which is the Southern part of our state. About a 6 hour drive for me. I think David DaCosta lives there though (or somewhere close).

All the best

Hi Tim, here is the promised video. The basic system is pretty crude, but it has worked successfully now for six years. However I would like to make a longer servo output arm in order to make the leverage a little straighter. For the 'slow' barrel return, I am using the TURNIGY servo speed reducer as previously mentioned.

Apologies for the jerky camera, but I was having to operate the transmitter at the same time!!
