Karl, I had to buy a complete pak 38 kit with figure on E-Bay and then cut the cases down to fit the breach.See in the for sale section my 222. I sold the figure seperately, and then fitted the metal pak onto the 222 gun mount. together with a DID metal MG 42. The cases should be straight for the 222 not curved!

Hi Robin,

The short, 10 rounds, mags for the KwK 38 on the 222 are not straight but still slightly curved.
The scaled mags that are available on the market, are in fact the long 20 rounds versions for the FLAK 38. Clearly these will not fit on the 222 unless they are modified as described by you.

Hi Colin,

I think it will be very difficult to find the Flak 38 as a separate item, and if you do it will cost you almost as much as the complete kit that it belongs to.

The separate Flak 38 (without the dol... I mean Action Figure) is available from www.war-toys.com . Search the left pane menu for DragonWWII, boxed Dragon 1:6thWWII, Marcus Holzhammer .
Still some useless parts included, but only USD 79,95.

Gentlemen, as you can see from my photo, the mags have been cut down to fit the breech, and they are still slightly curved!

I can't imagine they just fell into the vehicle.

Was there some form of gurtsack arrangement ?

Adrian,

The spent shells went into the "spent shell shute".
That is the part just above the right hand of the figure in the above picture from Robin. I have seen pictures where a kind of "sack" was attached to the bottom of the shute.

Were the MG casings directed to the same shute ?

Also, when belt fed guns like the MG and US .30 and .50 cal models are fired, does the belt leave intact or does the gun spit out the cartridges and links separately ?

When a MG is belt-fed, the empty shell remains in the belt link. In most German AFV's the belt and shells were led back into an empty "gurtsack".
As mentioned earlier, a big sized type of "Gurtsack" could be attached to the underside of the shute/deflector to collect the empty 20 mm, shells.

On the below picture you can see part of this device. It is the green piece of cloth below the shute,
