Hello
I have been revisiting parts of my build to date and i am a bit confused regarding the Drivers Armour front shield
it says in my manual that the steep side is to the front, but on the Tiger1 site is shows the steep side to the Driver
https://tiger1.info/EN/Drivers-vision-port.html
the bottom diagram on the page clearly shows this, but as i have not seen a clear ref photo from any of the references i have, can anyone clear this up
which is correct?
thanks
Donald

Hi Donald,
Try this image of 131 taken at the Tank Museum.... It clearly shows that the steeper face is to the rear.

Re: Tiger 1 Driver Armour front shield question?
Hi Alastair
That would also match the Samurai tiger photos i have, clearly this is a mistake in the 2021 Late Tiger build manual,as i had mine round the wrong way,but have corrected it now
i also see other builders have this round the wrong way,if there is a wrong way?
Again i have checked Modelers guide to the Tiger Tank and it has the Armour round the shallow way to the Driver
i am really confused now.
thanks

I certainly don't know for sure, but with that angled side to the rear, it creates a bit of a shot trap. Kinda seems like a bad idea but what do I know

Probably identical to yours, but just adding that the 2023 Tiger instructions are very clear, steep side faces the front of the tank

It very much depends on the angle from which the picture was taken. These were taken at TankFest a few years ago:

Asymmetrical:

Re: Tiger 1 Driver Armour front shield question?
Hi
In my opinion a side-on view gives the best indication. I decided to copy Tiger 131 as the F01 Wanne was produced quite soon afterwards. Remember that the item is not welded but affixed with five taper-head bolts. So it is conceivable that both options were fielded or the shield was switched round following its replacement or maintenance action.

Re: Tiger 1 Driver Armour front shield question?
As shown in Adrian's two photos, that armor is located in a groove in the glacis. If one looks at the bottom photo it seems obvious that because of that locating groove it is physically impossible to fit it the other way round.
Vince
p.s. Donald is the armour you are fitting the one you 3d printed in Aluminium?

Well done, Vince... I did not spot that! Can't see for looking . I should have remembered this as I have replicated the groove.

Re: Tiger 1 Driver Armour front shield question?
I just used the info from the tiger1.info website to make a 3d model so that I could make 2d drawings with dimensions to scratch build one for myself.
Never seen a 3d aluminium print so very curious how it looks.
