Having done a little research on the MG Ball water tight seal and toggles I came up with some interesting facts that some may not be aware of. I have posted these facts at the end of this post for those that do not have the book "Germany's Tiger Tanks" by Jentz and Doyle.
Firstly here is a simple tutorial on how to make the MG Ball cover toggles using my eye bolts and wing nuts.
I used a piece of 1/8" x 1/4" brass oblong tubing to make the mounting brackets. I did not use 1/8" x 1/8" channel as it is not deep enough for the eye bolts.
Firstly drill two holes in the tubing as shown in picture. I used a .063" drill to allow a little clearance to fit the 1/16" rivets.
Cut the tubing to the required size. I used a Dremel cutter for this as it is the easiest way to cut the thin brass.
Assemble toggles as shown, cut rivet to size and carefully dome rivet using a light tap hammer. Glue toggles in place and you are done.
Here are pictures of the Tow Rope Brackets and Periscope Mount with new Eye Bolts fitted. I have not cut eye bolts to length as they are easier to work this way. They can be cut to length once part is installed and ends can be domed slightly to prevent wing nuts coming off and being lost.
It appears most of the water tight seals were originally introduced for submerged fording. However when this was dropped in September 1943 many of the water tight seals were retained as rain water seals and fording up to a depth of 1.5 meters.
