German Jerry Can
Need some advise please.
Last year I drew a jerry can with the intention of someday printing it with a resin printer and adding it to my Tiger 1.
Nearly got one (printer) but found out that Anycubic very recently launched some new resin printers so I'm back to the drawing board. In the meantime I am reworking my original jerry can model as it had some details missing and I might be able to reproduce these small details with a resin printer.
Spent a day adding the filler cap latch mechanism from photos and at the moment trying to add the markings of the jerrycans.
Sometimes these markings were painted but more often these were debossed in the actual jerrycan. I will be trying for the debossed method but before going further I would like to ask a question.
I have been looking at many photos and it seems that these markings where present only on one side of the jerrycan. Can somebody please confirm this? Also, in the centre, there usually is a symbol which I suspect was the symbol of the manufacturer. So, I noticed that many different symbols exist. Unfortunately, I could not find one which is clear enough to reproduce. Does anybody have a clear photo showing this symbol?
Many thanks.
Vince

Re: German Jerry Can
Hello Vince,
Both version I have only have marking on one side. The right side as you show in your model. I have Dave Dibb version:

And a nice model from Thingyverse which I resin printed:

I'd go with letter on one side only.
There was an interesting Ytube video on the history of Jerry can here. You might be able to extract a MFR logo from this video.
Best regards,
Bob

Re: German Jerry Can
Thanks Bob for all that information.
That puts my mind to rest that the markings are on one side only. Never crossed my mind to check the Thingyverse or similar sites but I guess it's too late now. On a positive note; at least it confirms that the debossed markings are nicely reproduced with resin printing. Loved that video also. Need to see how to get a couple of screen grabs.
Search for the manufacturer marks continues.

Re: German Jerry Can
This morning after viewing again that video that Bob posted I had one of those moments.
Made a search for ww2 german jerrycan manufacturers and then another search which included the manufacturer and jerrycan and actually managed to find a line drawing for the Ambi-Budd Presswerk (ABP) symbol as used on the jerrycans.
So now I have another model on the waiting list for when I get myself a resin printer.

Re: German Jerry Can
Thanks Robert.
Today, just for fun, after a 10 minute job, made a water version of the jerrycan.
Also updated my Fusion 360 personal licence and it seems that it is now valid for three years instead of one year. Thank you Autodesk.

Anycubic launched the Photon M3 printer a week ago and am waiting to hear what people think about it. Although they said that it will, but also waiting to see if the Lychee slicer will support it.Get that printer! You will love it.

Re: German Jerry Can
Hi Vince, yeah I really wanted a Mono X, but the only gripes about it were the slicer. It doesn't work with Chitubox. Otherwise I would have gotten it. I went with the Elegoo Saturn instead. Its nice and big! My little Mars (original) has been a gem for the money spent.

Re: German Jerry Can
Hi.
What is the size of the cans in 1/6th scale. I found this: "1/35 WEHRMACHT JERRY CAN SET" on cults3d.com. It contains 14 different cans, but are in 1/35 scale. I need to reseze them to get the correct size.

Re: German Jerry Can
Hi Tor
I usually find dimensions from the internet which may or may not be correct. Have a look here:
http://sharky-fourbees.blogspot.com/201 ... -fuel.html
http://genadiafanassjev.blogspot.com/20 ... st_28.html
As you can see they are not exactly the same but very close to each other. So usually I choose one and work from there. Those are full size dimensions
so divide by six and you have 1/6th scale dimensions.
Hope it helps.

Re: German Jerry Can
I have been reading good things about the new Anycubic M3 resin printer (not the slicer). At the moment it's the favorite contender although I suspect there is a waiting list to get one.
In the meantime more jerrycans to try when I eventually get the printer.
