Magnifier Lamps any good or something better?

Post by Sam Hough »

Hi,

I've been using magnifying safety glasses for a while which help a lot but are not quite helping enough.

I'm tempted by a magnifying lamp such as https://www.amazon.co.uk/Daylight-Omega ... B06XP2N9P9

Has any used something like this? Any good? Better alternatives?

Cheers

Sam

I got myself three and promised to get one more to attach to my shoulder - couldn't live without them! :D
A little too much is about right...

Looks nice, a bit pricey. but if it gets plenty of use at the desk/work bench, why not.
I made my own hobby unit up from a couple of cheap devices found on the web, of course these come with helpful add on's, but they are not very stable unless clamped down. Gluing two bases together doubling the base weight improves things no end.
I would say the Crocodile grips are essential for giving you an extra set of fingers for soldering or holding tiny stuff too.

I prefer the ones you wear on your head. The mounted base ones ok, but I find them a little fudgy for focusing and then doing actual small work.
Some thing like these:

with light

Thanks all,

Lots to think about. Does seem a lot to spend if not going to be a sure thing.

I wear glasses so did wonder if it would avoid the hunting for glasses that have gone astray if I used a lamp/light combination.

Thanks again.

Hi Sam I have used various magnifiers, the fixed ones are a pain, I use these from Banggood less than £20 delivered

Thanks Jeff,

Rather belatedly I found this so the model making god (to me anyway) seems to agree with you and the others that point at much more bargain end of the market. Really good too that I can keep my glasses on... When my bench is in full chaos it can take a while to spot my rimless glasses...

Many thanks

Sam
