Jagdpanther barrel length

Post by graham pipe »

Hello all. Am building a Jagdpanther from accumulated parts and new spares from Armortek but I have a problem.

I've acquired a scratch made barrel, muzzle brake and mantlet collar but am not sure as to the accuracy of their length. I've scaled up 1/25th sizes from an old Tamiya model and checked various books and drawings but can't be absolutely sure of the correct dimensions. So, I wonder if anybody with a JP would mind measuring their model and telling me the sizes, please?

Attached is a diagram of same along with shots of my front glacis and said barrel. I couldn't find anything decent on which to photograph it so had to make do with a 1943 Wehrmacht 200 litre fuel drum which sits alongside a 1944, Das Reich Panther Ausf A wheel. I acquired the latter from a French farmer whose father liberated it near to Saint Lo in July '44. Ditto a towing shackle and, not shown, Panther and Tiger 1 track links.

Would really appreciate any help with this so thanks in anticipation.

Best regards from a scorching Normandy.

It doesn’t look too long but could be a little short! I don’t have the part you wish to compare but if I was an artist and I had to make a comparison I would just look at another part of the tank, like the mantlet, and see how many times it fit into the barrel, if that makes sense. Y divided by Z so to speak.

Thanks Brian - good idea! Must admit, I hadn't thought of doing a ratio based guestimate. Right, am off to find an oblique sideways photo that is taken square on to the tank.
