torsion bar material

Post by Martin Usher »

can anyone give me the identity of the material used for the torsion bars used in the King Tiger kit.
I wish to replace the badly beveled bars with newer and machine accordingly.

a High Carbon steel SAE 8660/5160 or suchlike, through hardened to 55HRC

would appreciate anyone from Armortek themselves for chipping in with the answer.

thanks in advance to any response.

regards,
Martin.

Martin,
You appear to have the identity of the steel, Alloy Steel 5160, also sold as AISI 5160, is a high carbon and chromium spring steel. Heat treated to Rockwell Hardness 55. Finding it in small metric sizes might be the ultimate secret. McMaster-Carr here in the US has flat stock but not rounds.

answers to above
Robert, I had identified three main materials but was not sure as all have there unique qualities and responses to Heat treatments.
availability as you note is also a major factor, I may be able to source round here in Canada as our main industries use diameter not flat/sq stock.
also Imperial size may be an alternate with slight mods to retained shaft ends.

Manny, I had asked Armortek for the same information and had waited for an answer, Kian has generously provided this.
he had noted the that a number of material changes had/have been made. Also that most likely material was 5160 grade details now unavailable.

as far as buying from Armortek this option is not available to me as Kiran has explained. with the information i know have i can source the correct material, purchase and have heat treated correctly. then its just a case of finding a machine to cut them on.

shipping a small amount of steel rods from the old country to Canada would not be cheap for sure.

thanks for comments and info.
and thank you to Kian for the return mail, greatly appreciated.
to me that is customer support.

Martin.
