I posted a note on a new Book about the end of the war in Europe, 1945, here:

It’s a fine piece of military history and the author, an infantryman, really understands what he’s writing about and brings the actions to life in a remarkable way.

I hadn’t realised quite how important the Universal Carrier was to infantry battalions this late in the war. John Russell’s account is peppered with examples of actions involving the UC. One of the most spectacular , which caught my eye, involved three carriers and two Wasps of B Company, 1/5th Welch, attempting to seize the bridge over the River Aller at Rethem, on 10th Apr, 1945. I won’t spoil the story but SGT Moses attempted coup de main was spectacularly brave. The UC is a much underrated vehicle.

Hi Stephen
Please no spoilers, I’ve just started to read the opening chapters.
It’s a weighty tome, well researched and sheds light on the closing months of the war in Europe that tends to be glossed over by previous historians.
I’ve just finished reading James Holland Sicily ‘43, another campaign that is largely glossed over.
