New Leyland L 60 engine for Chitfain

Post by Ivano Costantini »

As you have already read in the Chitfain section,
the L60 Leyland engine is ready. The end result looks good to me.
I reproduced, as I was asked, only the upper part due to space problems and the dimensions were reduced so that everything could be placed in the available space. Not having the tank, I asked Armortek for official measures which he kindly sent me. Thanks for this pleasure

I thought the simplest thing was that the motor, in its width and length, rested on a plane of any desired material, positioned above the electric motors.

After the drawings of the various pieces made several times,
above a drawing in exact 1/6 scale, I positioned all the pieces in relation to the tank measurements. An indispensable check to understand if, despite being almost entirely out of scale, there is an acceptable proportion to the overall view of the engine. It seems to me that the goal has been achieved, everything is harmoniously proportionate.

Another goal was to make a product with relatively low costs. Clearly everything is debatable, but here in Italy I am not the one deciding the production costs. First of all there are some very large pieces (engine block, coolant tanks) which make the "master" very expensive because the cost is linked not only to the execution time but to the volume of the piece to be made. Fortunately they do not have "undercuts" and therefore it was possible to make resin clones. Another 21 pieces must be made exclusively in 3D. Here too, to save money, I chose a material cheaper than liquid resin, the nylon type 11.

Another increase in costs is due to the presence of over 200 bolts. You all know how much they cost and although I have purchased many for the various engines sold for years, I cannot get discounts from the supplier. I tried to make them already attached to the pieces, but the result is not excellent. For the pieces of resin that I make, I use a pressure bell that works at 5 atmospheres, but this too is not enough to eliminate the imperfections (small air bubbles) of small details. I do not like to deliver pieces full of defects, indeed when known, I eliminate the defective part or, if possible, repair it. From the photos you will notice that some bolts are not perfect. Only injection molding allows a perfect result.

I thank Mr. Dennis Jones, who sent me photos of the letters in relief on the coolant tanks and decals
Deliberately, the raised letters are slightly larger than the 1/6 scale, otherwise with one or two color passages you would have risked not seeing them. The decals are also excellent.

The assembly is very simple, I have not given instructions because everything is very intuitive and the forum is full of photos. The most boring thing is to drill the bolt holes which are more than 200 but piercing the resin is very simple. To glue the 3D parts, I suggest using epoxy glue. However, as always, before pasting I suggest always checking the spaces, it may be necessary to make some small changes.

The two panels that mimic the radiator grille must be cut to the correct size.
The flywheel is made of 3 pieces, if you need to decrease the thickness, just sandpaper is enough.

The motor in the photos is also available, if someone wants to put it on a table, there is no more space in my house. I am collecting reservations without obligation, the number of engines sold determines the final price. If you are interested or want more information about the kit, contact me by e-mail: of.mod.ve@gmail.com
or with PM. For any information, I am available, it will be a pleasure to answer. I take this opportunity to thank all those who have given me information to make this model. Ivano

what do you mean by the structure of the pieces?
Sorry, I don't understand, the translator doesn't help me.
Thank you!

Thanks for the many PMs and emails.
DO NOT SEND MONEY!
Sorry but maybe I didn't explain myself.
The current booking is not binding, it does not bind the purchase!
It only serves to be able to formulate the lowest possible price. Next week I will communicate to everyone who has booked the engine, how many have been sold and the price I can charge. Anyone interested will confirm the purchase with a 50% deposit. I will not postpone the booking later. Everyone will go on vacation shortly. If I don't plan right away, the labs close, nothing can be done before September.
Thanks and sorry again if I hadn't been clear. Ivano
