REME Museum, Lyneham, Wiltshire - 2020 events

Post by Chris Hall »

If you look down this Forum page you'll see that we had a lot of fun last year at the REME Museum. They wish to build on that success by inviting us to two shows during 2020:

9-10 May: Wartime Britain (VE Day)
17 October: Model Show

Further details can be seen at http://www.rememuseum.org.uk/whats-on/.

Of course, these dates are already pretty popular - there are VE Day events all over the place (our tanks have been already been invited to Bovington and Lee-on-Solent), and the Model Show unfortunately clashes with Bovington's. But, from a location perspective, the REME Museum may be more attractive to Midlanders who don't fancy travelling all the way to the South Coast ..... or, as the REME Model Show is only one day, you might fancy a 2-stop strategy :).

Anyway, I've promised to keep REME aware of interest - they were very pleased to have us last year, have specifically asked us back, and it's always good to have a fresh venue, especially when it's got armour on display.

Usual show rules apply: insurance, no smokers etc. (see the Armortek guidance on displays). The museum is OK with historically justifiable markings, but don't go over the top (ie. normal German Balkenkreuse or Imperial crosses are OK, as are Afrika Korps markings, but no gaudy 'air recognition flags' with crooked crosses on ).

Please let me know via PM of any interest, and I'll work out if we can support them.

All the best,

Chris

I must admit I never did visit the REME Museum when it was at Arborfield even though I did my basic training there at Training Base & Depot REME. Also there for trade training at SEE ( School of Electronic Engineering ) and back at times on upgrading course and various equipment courses when it was known as SEAE ( School of Electronic and Aeronautical Engineering ).

Not sure If I would wish to visit it now. Some of the museum pieces now could have been cutting edge technology during my time.

Sadly, but unsurprisingly, REME has shut down and cancelled all their events until at least the end of July:

Thanks to those of you who expressed interest in the VE Day event.

Stay well,

Chris
