SW Model Show, Tank Museum, UK. 15/16 Feb

Thanks to everyone who has confirmed they're attending the SW Model Show.

Location We'll be in the Tank Story Hall again but in a larger and more open area.

Registration will be available on Friday between 10-1500. On Saturday you will need to unload between 0730-0830, although the show opens to the public 10-1700 both days. On Sunday, unloading can be between 0830-0930. I or Chris will collect the passes, so please come straight to the rear door of the Museum via the gate in Linday Road

Parking for exhibitors will be in Car Park 4, which is opposite the main car park.

I've just had a bit more information from Bovington, who are delighted that we'll have a presence on both days.

We are definitely in the Tank Story Hall, so please follow Stephen's instructions above. I'm told we've been given a larger running area but, given the redesign of the WW2 Hall and the massive move-around of their stock I'm not entirely sure where ! I've asked for a reference point (ie. next to such-and-such a tank) but, if I don't get clarity before the day, just look out for Stephen or me (or the Aussie Cent, or Liesel ) and we'll guide you in.

The Tank Museum is adamant that people can only drive their models if they are fully insured, which is completely reasonable. I've sent in all the certificates I've received, but there are a couple I don't have. Please make sure you have them ready for inspection (even if you've sent it to me, it would be useful for you to carry a copy with you).

And, as Stephen says, we're always open for more people ! If you fancy a day / weekend out, and driving the rust off those tracks in an iconic surrounding, please contact either of us. It'd be nice to see some fresh faces ......

SW Model Show, 15/16 Feb. Despite Storm Dennis and a leaking Tank Museum roof, the show attracted a considerable crowd of interested people who kept us busy through the two days. For the first time, Post War Armortek vehicles were not overwhelmed by WW2 stuff. Great to see Peter Quambusch over from Germany and Steve Morris who both drove for many hours to attend.

And finally, some masterclasses in model weathering. Firstly, our very own Mr Dibb, with Chieftain stuff.

No 3 Burner, in its normal state of cleanliness.

And lastly, a couple of Chieftains and an exquisite rendering of Mr Phillip Gorczynski's Cambrai Mk IV, D51, Deborah. Yes, rust on tanks is OK but only after they've been buried for at least eighty years.

Well, we survived everything Storm Dennis could throw at us, and still managed to have a good time ! Thanks to the 'usual suspects' for turning up - Stephen, Adrian, Simon Manning and Dave Battson, and particular thanks to Steve Norris and Peter Quambusch for travelling such long distances in shocking weather. And Dave Dibb, of course, for keeping an eye out while we went trawling for goodies at the trade stands. The Tank Museum people were very appreciative (we always generate good PR) - at least two promotional videos were shot for future events (if we get Youtube links they'll be posted up).

Looks like it was a great couple of days, shame shift work and a lack of serviceable vehicles prevented me from attending.

This is a 1/35th scale diorama of Operation Goodwood which took place in Caen in France in 1944. It was built by John Friberg in his attic over a period of many years. This is the first time it has been assembled completely and unfortunately John is not alive to see the fully assembled diorama as he passed away 18 months ago. It is 12 ft (3600 mm) x 12 ft (3600 mm) square made up of 36 x 2 ft (600 mm) square panels. It comprises of 1500 figures, 40 tanks, 40 military vehicles and many buildings. We erected it this afternoon at the South West model Show at Bovington Tank Museum where it will be on display until the 25th February. We are looking for a good home for this display so if anyone out there knows of one it is free.

I'm pretty sure that the Pegasus Bridge Museum in Normandy would jump at the chance to have this model display. I know the curator and will email him the pics and ask him if he wants it.

I shot off an email to Mark late last night, he's always very busy so might take a day or two to hear from him but will let you know when I do. I'd almost be tempted to take it myself if I thought the wife wouldn't go ballistic. I do have a large workshop in which I can set it up.

Hi Dennis,

I've had a reply from Mark at the Pegasus Museum in Normandy, he has said he doesn't have the space to display something this big, however there is a local 'Goodwood Association' who organise events alongside various museums in the Normandy area and they'd most likely jump at the opportunity. They organised a major display on Goodword with the Pegasus Bridge Museum last year. Mark is going to forward the details and pics of the model to them today and I'll let you know the SP as soon as I've heard back from them.
