Our annual pilgrimage to HMS Heron, always a great welcome, interested crowd and some aeroplanes. We renewed our close liaison with the C-17 crew from 315th Airlift Wing, AFRES, USAF, from Charleston. SC.
Early o'clock setup. The team, minus the photographer:
The crowd took a great interest throughout the day, in spite of F-35s and Red Arrows:
Star of the show was of course, Adrian's new acquisition from David Skeldon the FV4002 Centurion Armoured Vehicle Layer Bridge (AVLB):
But not without the need for running repairs (as ever):
We found the only "river" in town (it was a flat airfield after all):
And with this to hand:
Why would you not want to re-create this from Vietnam, 1970:
Glad that we avoided this:
And then a highlight of any air day, mounting the C-17. A large fleet of very valuable "super-cars" with their owners' super egos turned up but had to wait until we'd strutted our one sixth scale stuff:
The line up (driving courtesy of the USAF crew):
And then Meghan asked if she could have a ride.......
We're very obliging. So thank you to Denny for organising our attendance, to Mark (who travelled long distance to arrive at 0630), to David, Steve and Adrian for good company, cakes and tea.
Oh, there were aeroplanes too and where aeroplanes go, so does Dan Scholefield. Never mind the pointy things which make a lot of noise, these are real aeroplanes, flown by the British Army. I've spent 350 hours of my life flying these three, which were amongst a display of 9 military Austers. Good to see old friends again:
Happy landings. Stephen

Looks like you had a great day. 1/6 armour and 1/1 aviation - a dream combination not just for Dan!
Thanks for posting the pics Stephen.

Great to see you got on the C-17, things were not looking positive when I left what with the supercar competition
Fun was had with, you know, the flying things too however....

Re: RNAS Yeovilton Navy Air Day
Thanks for being the unofficial Independent Armour photographer, even if I'm still usually pictured up to my elbows in tank parts.
The bridge layer is certainly an impressive piece of kit, even though it doesn't really fit in my current van!
Even with the early start, and in my case a late finish, it's always an enjoyable day out and something different to the usual county/country shows we attend.
I think the "Vietnam" photo is superb, and we're lucky to have the perfect vehicles to be able to recreate it so accurately.
Interesting to see some public videos and pictures of the event surfacing on Facebook.
Adrian.

Forgot I did grab a few shots at the end of the day. Sorry Adrian, didn't realise I'd cut out your head! Nice tank though

Great stuff Dan, so the other 3000 photos you took were of aeroplanes?
