Around Bovington

Post by Christian Steinhauer »

Hello,

I plan to visit the Bovington Museum in July with family. Are there some "should have seen things" around Bovington?
Have fun building, Kind regards
Christian

Monkeyworld is a banana's throw from the Tank Museum, so probably the closest other attraction.

There are quite a few "Things to do in Dorset" web sites, such as these, which should give you and the family a good choice:

Christian, we live close by and can guide you. If you'd like to let me know via PM what sort of things you enjoy, we can give you some ideas. There's lots of interest:

The Jurassic Coast, including Lulworth Cove and Lyme Regis.

Tyneham - a ruined village abandoned in 1943 when the War Office requisitioned land for tank training. Tyneham Valley is now a site of scientific interest as the landscape, flora and fauna are much as they would have been eighty years ago. To get to Tyneham, you would drive over the Lulworth Tank Ranges with some of the most spectacular views in England (no, not the derelict Chieftain tanks, I'm talking about landscape).

Thomas Hardy - his birthplace, the church where his heart and his wife are buried (the rest of him is in St Paul's in London), his cottage where he wrote some of the most depressing books, equalled only by Heinrich Böll and Thomas Mann.

Poole Harbour and Studland Bay - beaches and sea.

Maiden Castle - the largest pre-historic hill fort in Europe (I'm looking at it as I type).

Good food - plenty of excellent restaurants and Chris Hall can tell you about the best fish and chips in the country (no not Harry Ramsden, the Yorkshire imposter).

Museums, to suit many tastes - Tutankhamun, dinosaurs, fossils, D-Day, Tolpuddle Martyrs (agricultural workers transported to Australia for forming a trade association) and of course tanks.

A bit further afield, Salisbury, now free of Novichok, with its stunning cathedral, medieval centre, prehistoric fort, Museum of Army Flying.

Hello Christian,

I've been with my family in 2016 in Bovi and on the way from the ferry we visited Stonehenge and of course the must have " Dover Castle".
Monkey World was also a good trip and fun for the Kids ;-)
Follow Stephens recommendations, we've been at the Jurassic Coast and it was so nice. Lot of great places not so far from Bovi.
On the way back we visited the "Drussilas Park" and we loved it very much. Great Park and worth the way to visit.

Greetings from Cologne,

Uwe

Many thanks for the ideas, that's a lot for only four days. I have to discuss with the rest of the family. But we can't visit Stonehenge - have you seen my last name
@Peter I think the comrades who are waiting for their tanks will kil me, if I disturb the guys from armortek at work :D
Have fun building, Kind regards
