Had a broken gear on 2003 Tiger 1

Post by Steen Vøler »

hi all

We had a fantastic battledy at our new battlefield in Denmark. The Tiger had a lot of fun did run without any problems during the day. However there was a tiny unusual noice from the drive from time to time.

As I god home and offloaded the TIger from my car, I drove it to its parking area and trying to drive it up a small slope, the Tiger suddendly wouldnt drive the right hand track.

I could hear the motor working, so suspected the motor gear pinion to have come loose.

However - the problem was in another place. It was the large outside gear to which the sprocket attach to. It had completely loosnede the arm from the gear. You can clearly see the damaged in the picture.

It shows the motor power indeed, that it can tear the axle loose from the gear. The newer gears are to my knowledge made in 1 piece and not as the early one in 2 parts.

Now I have to figure out how to fix this

Email Monique.
Ask for two new Tiger driven gears (probably CE0302 but best to check).
Await UPS delivery.

Does your Tiger have taper lock bushes in the Sprockets ?

Hi Steen, it is possible to weld the shaft to the gear. If you know some one who is good with a MIG, you will need to vee the section though and so get max penetration,( you may end up with an out of line gear if it's not tacked properly first) alternatively you could use silver solder, use 63 tons per square inch grade and get it cherry red but probably best to get new one piece gears from Monique. 8)

Another solution could be to knurl the end of the shaft and go for a press fit although most probably a hydraulic press would be required.

If it was mine I would do what Adrian and Phil suggested and that is just get a new one piece gear and shaft. Actually I would go one step further and get two (as Adrian suggested) and change the other one also.

Hi Steen,

if it was mine I would try to drill 3 holes centered between gearwheel and axle (using a tungsten carbide bur) and press 3 short bolts in the holes. After grinding and polishing the bolts the work should be done.
kind regards
Gerhard
