Panzer Ace Book

Post by Phil Dawe »

I am just reading Panzer Ace, the memoirs of an Iron Cross Panzer Commander from Barbarossa to Dunkirk by Richard Freiherr Von Rosen.
Absolutely superb, The author served on Panzer III and then Tiger Is. Very detailed descriptions of how his unit operated and the day to day living as a member of a panzer crew. Lots and lots of detailed photos taken by the author of Tigers in service. The author continued to serve post war as a panzer commander and retired as a Brigadier General with the Bundeswehr. Available from Amazon. Highly recommended reading for anyone with a passion for Tigers!

Agree this a good book. Would like to know more about his post war career. He's one of the few to survive the eastern front and live to write a book about it. The Normandy details are interesting, but sadly too brief.

Picked this book up in the "Works" sales, buying it with my Father in laws Birthday tenner. I'd buy a new or second hand book with the gift, collecting many books over the years. Sadly he passed away a few weeks ago, so I look on it fondly as a memento with the other books.
Panzer Ace, The Memoirs of an Iron Cross Panzer Commander (ISBN 17843826630) is an extremely good easy to read book covering the career of a professional Panzer crewman working his way up through the ranks during WWII.
He includes life with the Panzer III, Tiger1(PzAbt 502) to the King Tiger(PzAbt 503) , the latter. I'm surprise he isn't picked up more, since he is forever ironically bound with the KT and those columns of the brand new super weapon, frighteningly lined up for the Propaganda reels.
He tells the story behind many of the iconic KT pictures in the book, an upside down KT takes a lot of explaining and the trouble he went to save other marooned KT's under his supervision.
Much like Tigers in the Mud, these authors were lucky. Wounds taking them alive away from the battle field to tell the tale.
Many were not so lucky.
Oh Man, I only ride em I don't know what makes them work,
Definatley an Anti-Social type
