Good example of Tiger 1 sound?

Post by Sam Hough »

Hi,

I'm unlucky/lazy enough not to have heard the 131 with my own ears. Has this video captured it well?

Much higher revs than I thought and more backfires? Presumably in real life much more bass?

Cheers

Sam

Hi Sam
I was at Tiger Day X with the premium pass and got very close to the tiger 1. The sound captured is actually very fine quality and represents well the sound "as if you where there"

Compared to a couple of years ago attending Tankfest hearing the Tiger 1 engine then, there have done fantastic work on the engine. in 2015 the engine was backfiring all the time during the run.
cheers

Apart from the fact it has an HL230 engine instead of an HL210

I suppose it depends on the power band of the engine. I would have thought WW2 drivers would have made more use of the gears, and probably not driven around in first for so much of the time, but then it is parading for the audience, rather than performing proper maneuvers.

This is what it sounded like before they cured the backfiring issue.

Thanks all,

So Adrian: I was surprised by the constant high revs, like a turbine, so I shouldn't try and copy that?

Cheers

The original sound is unfortunately changed by various circumstances like microphone of the camcorder, loudspeakers of the PC and so on. Also the 'original' sound of a model must be different from the 'real tank' to give the illusion of the right sonority.

In 1/6 scale it is not very easy to produce the right bass sounds due to the size of a bass box and the power of the amplifier. We now use 250 to 350 watts and double coil systems with a diameter of 25 cm with good results. In 1/4 scale there are much more possibilities using 35 cm bass tubes and up to 2.500 watts. The resulting sound is awfully crazy, because also the loudness is like original. Our sounds are recorded from Panther (Trier) and King Tiger (Saumur) and transferred to the Beier sound module.
kind regards
Gerhard

Thanks Gerhard,

I'm slowly a getting an idea of what a complicated subject it is. I've got sounds ripped from a game that is meant to be recorded from the 131. Not sure if a good thing but they have samples at various rev/load combinations. Not having heard the real thing is a bit of a handicap though ;)

I don't know if it's a necessary driving style on the Tiger due to the gearbox ratios or whether they're scared of stalling it and having to wind up the inertial starter in front of the public

If you watch this video, it's possible to idle a Sherman up onto a flatbed trailer with hardly a press on the accelerator pedal.

Maybe they're just being careful with 131 and prefer to run in low gear and high revs to protect it from the strain on the drivetrain components caused by gear changes. I wince every time they do change gear in it, as it seems to lose all forward momentum and crashes into gear each time

we actually got this explanation on the VIP tour of Tiger Day X that they prefere running it in the lower gears due to the fact that they need the RPM to be within a certain scope for the Tiger not to kill the engine

Pictures are from the lecture we had from the team that drives the Tiger
