Chassis colour

Post by Adrian Harris »

As far as I can tell, all the Sd.Kfz 222 chassis were made by Horch and sent to be mated with the relevant bodywork elsewhere.

Would they have all been delivered in PanzerGrau or would the later ones have been delivered in Dunkelgelb ?

Most people seem to build 222 kits, in any scale, with a grey chassis, then oversprayed with whatever is relevant for the bodywork.

to understand what colour to paint a leichter Panzerspahwagen Sd.Kfz.222 you have to know which version you have and when that version was built, the Armortek kit is the Sd.Kfz.222 Ausf B - 5 series, production of this series started in 1942 and ended in June 1943 so there will be a crossover with earlier built versions being painted dunkelgrau and the final versions being painted dunkelgelb, with many modifications to the series problem is most of the records were lost or destroyed and most books provide the wrong drawings with the exception of Panzer Tracts No13-1 this book is excellent.

Yes, the AT 222 is a bit of a mongrel - late features and early features.

I've found pictures of AK 222's with the traficators on the wings and no armoured hub covers, so I guess there's some room for manueover.

One thing is for sure and that's that I don't want the whole thing in Panzer Grau

the 5 series should have the traficators mounted on the front mudguards these changed positions depending on the series, the armored hub covers were not used on the 4 and 5 series, there are many other features that were dropped during the life of the 5 series such as the vision blocks in the turret sides the jack was moved from the left mudguard to the right mudguard when the extra stowage bin was added plus many more.
don't forget the 222 served through to the end of the war many were rebuilt and no doubt repainted in dunkelgelb

Can anyone post detailed info on the "Pennent" which looks, to me, like a steel frame over which various markings/cloth/??? coverings can be attached or fastened?

They appear to be more prevalent on the early series vehicles. But I never seem to see them showing up on kits.

Thanks for any information!

Cheers,

RPR
