Hi all
I have just opened my birthday present and found a 25pounder .
Question do I need to remove the tooling mark's before I start building. As I don't want to build and Paint then to find I can see the tooling mark's.

Flat plate and 400 grit removes most tooling marks.

If you don't have a flat plate, a piece of glass works great!

Of course, the originals had a lot of tooling marks, casting slag, roughness from foundries, etc. War Finish was a genuine 'mark' on British products to designate the fact that they did not fettle to the pre-war degree of perfection. So a few tooling marks may well be in keeping with the original.

The problem is you have 1:1 tooling marks on a 1:6 model.

Which can be modified with a bit of Mr Surfacer 500 and an old brush

Tooling marks etc are also one of the reasons hand made imperfect parts look better than 3D printed perfection when representing wartime models etc!

Hi Andy,

I have had it on many of the sheet parts, its only very light surface rust. I normally just give them a rub down with a sanding block and prime, so far had no long term issue with my 25 Pdr. On the Pheasant they were the same and I have just polished the worst of it off and sealed them for now as planning on leaving it in metal until after the summer shows.

A week at War and Peace and anything I have missed looks much worse

Hi Andy, regards from the other (better ) Island.
A bit of rust is pretty common on sheet steel parts, especially in our high salt environment. As has been said, it’s usually just on the surface and will clean off easily. If you are concerned about heavier rust a dab or two of “rust eater” fluid from your local motor accessories shop will give added peace of mind. Once cleaned up, get a coat of etch primer on and some paint, all will be well.
