Original Limber Question?

In building my limber with the Armorpax additions, I am just curious what this "platform" is?



It's readily apparent on the originals.







I am just wondering what that platform is for? Something obviously mounts on it. What?

Good question RR, considering all the hours of research that I did whilst building my limber I never once came across a photo of the said bracket in use, or found any diagrams labelling or referring to it, the only guy that might know is our very own Dave at Armopax, cheers Phil.

I have no knowledge of the limber, either as a kit or in real life. But, to me, that platform looks like it would take a small anvil .....

I was thinking along the same lines Chris but it's a bit high and would be awkward to use, maybe a antenna mount or a camo net pole mount. It is fairly substantial in it's construction but then everything is over engineered for the WD..... Phil.

According to the Illustrated Parts List for the Limber, Ordnance, No 27, it's a:

Bracket, Retaining, Miscellaneous Unknown Items.

Well, it is Sunday.

I thought it might be for a fuze setter but the 25pdr used a range of wrenches. It doesn't appear to be anything to do with the mounting of the firing platform. Gunners aren't allowed out with tools so a vice isn't the answer. I wondered if it had anything to do with the large stowage box you sometimes see attached to the side but that has its own fittings. Which leaves..... HMVF as the best chance of an answer.

As an aside, does anyone know how to filter out anything to do with plastic models when you search online for military subjects? It seems now that all you get is a flood of the same pictures of the box art of the latest from Tamiya or Dragon.

If you're Googling, the best way is to put a dash in front of anything you want ignored, so search for:

Hi All,

One of the few parts I made but have no idea of its end function. Most parts I can figure even if I can't find reference's. I had in my head a spare wheel bracket but I have no idea whether I just imagined that or there is any fact in it. With anything on it though you would not be able to mount the traversing ring on the four corner mounts but then again it may have been some sort of either/or.

Hi Robert,

In the "British 25PDR Field Gun in Detail" book there is the following picture that shows a spare hub mounted on the plate and therefore I would suggest that this is to carry a spare wheel.

Carrying a complete hub makes total sense!

Mine damage, bad wheel bearings, whatever... the hub was as at-risk as anything. And could be a PITA to rebuild in the field. You could patch a tire and carry a lot of tubes. And you carried an extra wheel/tire on the Ant anyway. Maybe more than one. But carrying a hub that can be used on the gun, the limber and probably on the Quad (depending on the drive-dogs brake shoes and splines, etc. from the axle shafts) makes total sense!

Now... wonder if it's worth ordering an extra wheel hub and making up a carrier!
