Reference Material

Post by Adrian Harris »

I've spent the weekend bumbling through Amazon and Ebay and found a couple of interesting reference books.

The best is issue 34 of AFV Modeller, which has a construction article on the Dragon M2 kit, as well as a history of the M2 and a photo walk-round giving lots of interesting shots of suspension, storage etc.

Cover price is 6 ukp but I picked it for less than half that, inc postage.

Another bargain is American Tanks of World War II, by Thomas Berndt. This has articles on both the Sherman and M2/M3 halftracks, with lots of colour photos of restored vehicles. A risk using these as references but it does pick up on some of the restorers' errors.

The other two which arrived today are the Squadron M3 Half-Track in Action and the Concord US Half-Tracks in Combat, both of which are chock full of period black and white photos.

Roll on Christmas

Thanks for the pics and the book references.

Mike, this Hunnicutt book isn't too bad - I found one on Amazon for less then 30ukp. The Sherman one was nearly threes time that!

... later ...

The Hunnicutt book has arrived. 240 pages, high quality glossy paper, hardback. Crammed full of photos and diagrams - did you want to know on which seat the number 4 gunner of a heavy machine-gun squad should sit - see page 45 for details

Some of the pictures posted here are of International built halftracks - dont get confused between the White/Autocar/Diamond T halftracks and the International ones. If any of you guys need good close-up shots of a M3 or M3A1 just let me know, or come and take them yourself!

BTW - the best book I have seen on halftracks in the field is "Half-tracks in Combat", written by Steven J Zaloga, fantastic photographs, many of which you will not see anywhere else.

Hi Tony,

valid point! most of the shots are just the general ones we took at Beltring, I have been talking to Lars who is hopefully arranging access to an M3 and M3A1 (not yours are they?) and I will also be doing a large additional shoot on his M16. We have 1:1 skate rail mounts, pintles and cradles etc in the pipeline to work from so with luck and a following wind we should get some reasonable parts out.

Does anyone know of a good condition M2 around anywhere for interior references such as seats etc?

cheers

Hi Dave!

They might be mine but have not heard from Lars yet. I thought one of the Second Armored guys has a M2A1 (but with a rear door)?

If you get stuck for a M2 I'll do a ring-around and find you one.

Cheers!

Tony
