King Tiger makeover 2017

Post by Phil Woollard »

I have started on our recently acquired KT and will post some progress photos soon once I get the boring paint stripping bit out the way.
Don't know which example to follow yet, but this one caught my eye as it's a little different.
Would anyone have any info on the model example portrayed in the photos, or is it fictitious ? Cheers Phil.

Was this they way it was painted by it's unit, has it had another turret fitted at some point?

Fictitious Phil.

It's a custom paint job done on a smaller RC model by another manufacturer.

If you want a similar effect but portraying a real original, see David Parker's stunning 1/16th rendition of KT "124" of sPz.Abt. 505 which he describes in considerable detail in his book:

I would say fictitous or a model resembling a museum piece (possibly in Russia )

Vehicle depicted would be late war, no zimmerit coating and no cupola MG ring.
Amount of rust is excessive and is not realistic for a vehicle that was in active service at the time. But it would be realistic for a vehicle that has been parked up and neglected for many, many years.

That's nice too Stephen, so many nice examples out there, I'm still drawn to the fictitious version I suppose because it's so different.I think you are right Mark. This KT will be for sale when it's done so if any potential customer would like to add some input they can (by PM if that suits).
Some progress photos of the boring bits!

Hi Phil,

That is a nice paint job in your photo, it might be fictitious but so are most of the paint jobs on here. they are nearly all over weathered and made to look like they've been stood outside for 20 years, Stephen has commented that he would have had the crew on a charge if they had been in his regiment  You know yourself that the paint job depends on whether you want to do zim or not, and the one in Stephens photo has been done to death, Paul Morris did a whole series of them.

Hi Phil,

I have to agree with your comments there. I have seen a Panther done in the same camo scheme as 105 and it didn't look right in 1/6th scale. 304 is a bit too artistic licence for me, but it certainly would like nice, and its what floats your boat not mine.

These are some pics of a KT I finished a little while ago, it has zimmerit and a rather dull three colour camo paint job, the KT in for a makeover will have no zim or three colour camo that's for sure! Something way different this time. :D

A little more progress removing the paint for the KT.

I shall leave just a tad of this grud on the armour plate surface to add a little more interest to the overall finish, when the weathering is applied in downward strokes it will drag the paint leaving subtle streaks.

Initial paint removal while it's all together, then a more intense clean when all the fittings and the plates are taken apart.

It's a little easier to strip the small parts of paint while they are held in place. I can now see the armour fixings under the filler, a little heat and the allen wrench will just slip into the cap head, the gentle heat will also help release the thread without breaking the bolt off.

The rear plate.....lots of work to be done here but it's very rewarding.

I think that may be a good idea, the total cost of the parts I ordered came to around $350 (with the cheaper shipping). So I'm not very happy and somewhat disillusioned with our custom services/policy, we buy goods , we sell goods, it pays the our wages, it pays the bills....so now I will keep it in house, is that whats desired ?
