Hub plates and hubs - thread size

Post by Mark Heaps »

Hi all,
2009 KT Kit.
Hub plates CK0208 and Hub inner CK0210, hub outer CK0209, not going together cleanly.
They will thread but only go so far. No thread damage observed and multiples of each tried.
I suspect that the thread on both was created using a lathe and I just need to clean them up using a tap & die which I will have to order.
Measurements strongly suggest a M22 x 1.5
Can anyone confirm this is the correct size I need.

Mark

I have not gotten that far yet but noticed similar with suspension shafts, CK0202 and CK0203. They were a tight fit to the arms but die did not fit at all. Tap of same dimension fit the arms perfectly. While on it, my hub plates CK0208 do not tighten down on the outer wheel disks CE0250. Do yours?

Edit: I had to check. Yes, my hubs don't thread to good either. Goes only maybe half a turn. But, a quick do over with a suitable needle file to the start of the thread and it is already a lot better. I know there are thread files but I don't have one. The aluminium is soft and thin and it does not take a lot of deformity to interfere. Save your die money :D

Update - got a set of M22 x 1.5, 2 taps + 1 die.

The die ran cleanly round 16 of the 18 hub-caps ( Hub Inner CK0210 and Hub Outer CK0209 ). Just 2 needed minimum force to clean the thread. No die stock was required for extra leverage, just turned the die and hub-caps by hand.

Then tried the taps on two of the hub-plates (CK0208). The first stage tap went through with minimum effort, hub-plate and tap turned by hand, no external leverage used.
Second stage tap threaded cleanly but only got to about three quarters depth before meeting excessive resistance. I would have to clamp the hub-plate in a vice and use external leverage on the tap.

The hub-plates have not yet been machined to prevent the "outer wheel wobble problem" and I do not have a lathe. However my brother in the UK has two. Hub-plates, taps and die are in the post to him. He will clean up the threads, after machining the hub-plates, before sending the hub-plates back to me.

It is not what you know but who you know :D
