Leichter Panzerspähwagen Sd.Kfz.222 rebuild

A few months ago I bought a second-hand 1/6 scale Armortek Leichter Panzerspähwagen Sd.Kfz.222 the rebuild will be done in two parts first will be the Fahrgestell second will be the Panzeraufbau this will include the Turm and 2cm Flak 38.
Unfortunately I didn’t take any pictures of the Panzerspähwagen before I started the rebuild this picture with my Kübelwagen shows the size difference.

The project begins with stripping everything down to single components stripping of original paint and readying for various layers of paint, all alloy parts are fist coated with acid etch primer then red oxide and finally dunkelgrau RAL7021 this will be changed at a later date to dunkelgelb RAL7028













Once everything was painted all parts were laid out ready for rebuild all screws that required Locktite 222 had this applied during the rebuild

Hi Sam, No, the Kubel is a static Dragon plastic kit that Mark is detailing and converting to full RC.

Mark - if you intend to run the model a lot, I would recommend the upgraded steel hubs - couldn't tell from the pictures whether you have these or not.

Hi Peter, Mark has already upgraded to the steel hubs as one of the alloy hubs had already got stripped threads.

As Tim says I have the steel hubs fitted along with new 2rs rubber bearings including the transfer gear from the motor, whilst I was rebuilding the Fahrgestell I also changed the oil in the front and rear diffs to 100000cst silicone the centre diff I used one part milliput and stuffed this into all the spaces this acts as a lock but will also allow me to remove if need be if I have further problems with the diffs then I may also lock the other diffs, there is still detail to add to the Fahrgestell such as the handbrake cables but this will be done after the Panzerspähwagen has been tested at Munster in a few weeks’ time.
This is the re-built Fahrgestell ready for testing

Adrian this is on the To do list along with correcting the centre hubs, the Armortek 222 is a 5 series Auf B model the triangular armoured hubs were only used on the first 3 series then discontinued, the main thing now is to see if the dive has been improved.

I put 1 million weight silicone diff grease in the centre diff and 300 thousand in the front and rear- works fine, even with one wheel missing!

Peter I have now tested the 222 and the diffs still slip with one wheel of the ground I will try the 300000 grade oil in the front and rear diffs.
The 222 is now back together and has been tested ready for Munster in a few weeks’ time when I return I will start detailing the Panzeraufbau and give the whole model a full respray

Mark really nice model to your usual high standards. It took a few attempts on my part to get mine running nicely. I found eventually that the secret was to completely dismantle the diffs to an empty case (careful with the tiny components). Then add some of the 300k silicone, leave to settle, add one gear add more silicone and so on each time leaving the stuff to settle out. Same with the centre diff. A bit laborious but worth it if you intend to run the model much. I notice now that Gravity do a 20million weight grease now as well. Of course the diffs were designed for a much lighter model so there is a limit to their performance on this relatively heavy vehicle, but I would suspect that the original got stuck off road on occasions.
