Suspension bushes

whats the best method of inserting the brass bushes into the suspension block. Had a quick look today and they all appear to be pretty tight. I'd hate to knacker them

The instructions say to use a mallet but I've found using a bench vice with a block of wood against each face is easiest, as it tends to keep them square to each other.

Any which aren't a tight enough fit to stay in place under pressure can be fastened with Loctite.

Make sure you clean up the edges of the holes and the bushes to remove any burrs.

Another way is to insert a bolt slightly undersize, with the head against the suspension bar and the bush protected with a washer. Then tighten the nut. It will drive the bush in square. With practice though, it's easy enough with a mallet, with two cautions: both mating surfaces must be scrupulously clean and the bush should be at room temperature or lower. If you handle it excessively before fitting, as in cleaning, it may heat sufficiently to affect the tolerances and make fitting difficult.

It was a long time ago, but I replaced all the brass bushes in a Sherman with needle roller bearings. Rolls, minus tracks, like the world's biggest in-line skate! Book of Records stuff...smooth as silk.
