Battery Charging Again

Post by Allan Richards »

I have the Tiger with two AGM 20 A/hr batteries which I charge as a pair at 24v with an Accumate 3 stage charger. Whilst charging them today the battery charger went from the high charge to medium charge as normal, where it seems to stay for a while but I noticed that one battery was getting a little warm whilst the other remained ambient temperature. Is this normal? The batteries charged through the cycle ok ending on the trickle stage.
When I've tried to charge other dodgy old batteries the charger detects faults and won't charge, suggesting that things are ok but.....

Hi Allan

How many times have you charged your batteries as a pair :?: When they were wired together, they would have been at a different charge levels, so one will take more of the charge than the other. After a few charges as a pair they will be fine. The type of charger you have will look after your batteries. The AGM20’s are designed for the type of use.

As long as the battery doesn’t get hot, just warm to the touch, you shouldn’t have a problem. If in doubt, take them out, and charge them separately for a couple of times.

You’ll be surprised at the amount of abuse these rechargeable batteries can take, and still recover. Remember, never run them completely down (They will never get to this state installed in you Tiger), charge them fully after a run, and NEVER be tempted to fast charge them. It’s probably the quickest way of shortening your batteries life.

Hope this helps

Mick

Mick,

They have been charged together as a pair probably about 40+ times. I've never charged them seperately. When I received them I think they were almost fully charged so they were installed in the tank and used as a pair striaght away. I hope they are ok as they are expensive to replace.

I think that they are loosing a little capacity as the run times are getting a little shorter and I remember Vince complaining about his Tiger batteries losing capacity as he fitted even bigger batteries to his model but didn't use them very much. I wa wondering about cycling the batteries more often or seeing if there was anything on the market to do this. Many years ago my father hd a battery cycler for his model aircraft R/C gear.
