David,

The wheels look good.

On the 1/16th scale tanks I used a wash of 90% thinners and matt black paint put on with a bigish soft brush. the paint pools nicely around the details on the wheels like the nuts. When it was dry I then used artist oil white to dry brush the high points of the detail with a stiff brush. It does really bring out the detail of which there is plenty on the late Tiger wheels compared to the smooth early Tiger wheels.

I don't know what it will look like on the 1/6th wheels but its just a suggestion to bring out as much depth as possible on the model.

David,
The camo looks good. Colors are spot on. My only critical comment would be to try and avoid too many pie wedge shaped camo patches on the wheels (from hub out) - the pattern should be more random. Like they were painted in a hurry.

Maybe a thinned black wash to highlight the details and and a quick coating of dust colored overspray to finish up. Looking great though. I agree with Jim, I'm anxious to start mine, but have 2 tanks already in progress. Gotta finish something first!

Keep the pictures coming. You details are awesome, love the smashed up side fenders.

Hi Robert , looking at the wheels again you are completly right , the pattern is to wedge shaped. so i have redone them to a more
radom pattern and they look much better i will post anthor picture
later
i will do the washes ,,highlighting, and some weathering when the
tank is nearly complete so i can see the overall effect.

cheers Dave :D

Tiger crews did not always paint the wheels, but I think they look better with camo. It seems to me that crews could not have counted on mud to be there and stay on when needed. And with the increasing fear of the AAF and RAF by mid 1944 I think most Tiger crews would have made the time to do the wheels.

This is my Tiger SS Pz Abt 101, No. 311 that just finished rehab by Lee Sellars:

Dave,

Your wheels are super. I can't wait to see your Tiger completely camoed. I hope mine comes out half as nice as yours.

Martin,

Your Tiger looks great! Thanks for posting the picture. I agree, camo on the wheels looks much better. I was going to leave my Panther wheels non-camo but now I'm not so sure.

Glad the forums up again. :D

David,

Your wheels look spot on the real thing for SS101.
If I get my wheels like that I will be very pleased!

Martin,

That is one fine Mid Tiger you have.
It has all SS101 features and the colour scheme is superb.
Well done you and Lee!

If I may comment just one tiny thing so was the spare track bars in front made of a round steel rod in all 3 SSPzAbt 101company’s.
As a round bar can take less weight then a profile one (like yours) they got slightly bended after a while, well seen in photos.
Sorry for me getting carried away but SSPzAbt 101 is a special interest of mine..

Tim,

Please don’t mix how Tiger and Panther wheels were painted :D .
On tanks with schurzen there was not the same need for x-tra colours as the wheels was in shadow.
3-tone on Panther wheels was rare but a few had it so my suggestion is to keep them dunkelgelb with dust and oil stain unless you are lucky to find a photo telling otherwise.

Go for something like this my friend:

Thanks Kent

That was the original plan. I'll stick to it and save camo on the wheels for my late Tiger. (it will be, yet another, SS101 Tiger)

Thanks Kent, your Panther looks amazingly lifelike!

I found images of Tigers with and without wheels painted in camo. My Tiger was originally in camo and with the wheels with no camo, but this appeared incomplete to my eye. The current paint & camo scheme was determined after I scoured the popular books mentioned on the forum. Lee Sellars rehab'd the Tiger and he justly deserves the credit for the final result. I have nudged Lee into doing this and adding that, well beyond what most have had to deal with doing in a Tiger model. And he's been patient, kept a good sense of humor with me, and he made it all work well. :)

Regarding your mention of the 3rd Co. spare track bars being round steel rod, I have no images that clearly show this. So if you could send them to me <martin@company7.com> then I'd think about this fine touch.

I considered adding the Barrel Travel Support (probably Stannard's TT13) at the rear since Armortek explained ("modeled after an Oct 1943 produced Tiger I"), and this predated that accessory. But I have seen images of other Tigers in 3rd Co. with this. Any opinions are invited here too.

Cheers,

Martin

Hi Martin,

Yes your #311 had the barrel support.
Here is a shot of your #311 and if you look carefully you can see the rounded bar and the support.
The support is fully open and one of the ½ rounded parts is just above the head of the man in the middle.
#311 did also have the extinguisher placed to the turret bin, at the right side near the loaders hatch and not on the engine deck.

The Panther I showed above is not my but a 1:35 I found on the net.
My 1:6 will be something like that in the future...I hope

Cheers

It turns out that I had two B&W images of 311 taken that day in May 1944, and your image is the same higher resolution enlarged view showing that fine level of detail. I missed the Barrel support altogether and this confused me since I have images of No. 331 and 323 in action or training in 1944 with their support up.

I guess we'll have to strip my Tiger back down to the metal and start all over again :(. Or, maybe I can find a way to add these detail bits on with less drama.

Thanks!
