rubber treads on wheels

Post by John Pissey »

OK, I've almost finished pack 3.... I see that on the 3 dimensional drawings offered that the rubber tires are on the wheels. No instruction given and I have looked on the other packs and they don't mention them. I have to admit that I know how to put tires on. My question is that they are not a snug fit which is what I thought they would be. As a matter of fact they are rather sloppy. If I was running this tank with the treads on I'm sure they would come off. How does one stick them... Do you use loctite or super glue or what? Do I need to take them off again once they are on for any reason?

John. No problem here. You'll find a number of builds here on the Forum with suggestions. My attempt is here:

In summary, use Loctite 480 to retain them and cable ties to ensure a tight and accurate fit while the glue goes off. Others may use a two part epoxy. I prefer the Loctite because this is exactly the application Loctite 480 is designed for. For a Tiger, you'll probably need one 20g bottle. A word of caution - Loctite has a finite shelf life once opened, so it's best to set up a production line and do them all at once, although it's life can be extended by keeping it in the fridge. You can deal with any small gaps once on with another application and more cable ties. You'll never need to take them off (unless you want to simulate battle damage......)

You might enjoy going through some of the builds on the Forum where you'll pick up lots of good techniques but always ask if you're uncertain, this is the friendliest of forums.

Best regards

Stephen

Hi John!
I have tried several ways to fasten the rubber rings. The only one that worked is ACC (super glue). It is really no fun at all when they come off when driving!
I had one get chewed in behind one of the sprockets. Now, the motors are so powerful that it is hard to notice a bit of snagging before it has gotten pretty far.
So, the advice to follow is to do this right from the beginning. If you can find the product Stephen suggests, it is probably best. If not, ordinary ACC will do just fine. I found a brand with a brush in the cap, pretty much like a bottle of nail polish. Very practical for this purpose. :D

Good luck with your build!

A little too much is about right...
