Panther fan housings

Post by Tim Page »

Hi all, I just ordered a new fan casing for my series one Panther G so i can do away with the crew heater.
The part arrived today (thanks Gill).

Unfortunately, whilst it fits it looks nothing like the existing conventional fan housing on the right hand side which is taller as well.

The existing fan housing is about 16.5mm high and the new one only 13mm high. It has the same footprint as the old fan and the bolt holes line up perfectly.

As you can see from the photos, they are definately not the same.

It looks to me like i have been sent a King Tiger version by mistake.

It looks like i will need to speak to Gill again tomorow.

Cheers

Tim the first ones where cast later ones machined. You need a cast one or another machined one. I have just had a look for you and don't have a cast one in stock.

The grill pattern is different too, although I haven't checked, it probably is a King Tiger cover.

Hi all, I am certain it is a King Tiger fan casing.
I saw some pix of Steve's King Tiger and it looks identical.

Phoned Gill today and it is now in the post back to warm and sunny Devon.
Fingers crossed they have the correct part in stock. Otherwise, i will have to undo all my mods converting it to a September 1944 Panther.

Cheers

Hi Tim,

I think you have got a Panther one as it has 12 spokes, the K2 had 11 spokes.
If you want to see how the real one looked like please look here in my Panthersaga:

Please keep yours as an early -44 instead of a sept -44, my kind of choice as well :D

Kind regards
Kent

Hi guys, thanks for your replies so far.
I agree that both of mine have 12 spokes and that the KT looks to have 11, BUT, i have never seen this pattern of fan case on a Panther.
The new piece has 12 solid spokes wheras the normal cast type is 11 split spokes which dont do all the way accross.

I cannot see this type fitted to any Panther in any of my books.

Anyway, i would prefer to get another cast one to math my existing one.
If not then i guess i will have to get a pair of the new ones from Gill.

For the record Kent, my Panther will be a mid 1944 version with a chinless mantlet, without Zimmerite and without the crew heater. I have found a number of examples built in that window, but not yet decided on unit or colouscheme.
