1/6 scale headlights

Post by Kevin Hunter »

Dear all,

I'm trying to source a scale version of a British 7" round headlight, as used on certain Centurion Mks and probably landrovers etc.

By my reckoning the model lens will be 3cm diameter and my Mk 11 Cent will need 4 of them. I scoured the web without success - anyone know of a supplier or got ideas?

Regards

Kevin

Hello Kevin, try looking at model boat web sites, i know some sell model boat search lights which may be suitable.Just will need a frame putting together. Another source is model car roof bars, there are many of those on offer on the web, otherwise it will be a scatch build i guess.

best wishes,neil

Thanks for your input, much appreciated. Still struggling a bit to find the right size "off the shelf". Have decided 3cm watch glasses will make the lenses, just got to come up with the buckets now. 3d printer may be the way to go if I can get access to one here in Guernsey. Will let you know how I get on.

Hi Kevin.

Now you have come up with watch lenses for the glass (top idea) something I have toyed with trying but never got round to having a go is to use a doming set, and make the backs out of annealed brass or copper sheet?
Cheers Paul.

Belated thanks for the further suggestions folks, and for your kind offer Sarah.
I may have a solution, but either way need to check some details. So, if anyone going to Tankfest can get near the Cent Mk12 at the gate with a tape measure and camera:
Please check headlamp diameter (7"?)
Depth of headlamps, and rear profile (parabolic or hemispherical)
Width of brush guard
Depth of brush guard between vertical uprights
Thickness of brush guard (20mm?)
Would be a great help, as sadly I cannot over for the weekend.
Have fun, and thanks.

Hi Kevin,

The Conservation Centre floor was open at Tankfest. There was a Cent with the same lights, unfortunately I didn't have a measure but I hope these pics are of some help:

A big thankyou for those Robin, really helpful. Using what I know , plus info from other members, I can work out all dimensions now. The square on pics of the sides of the brush guard and lights are of great use as I don't have to deal with perspective issues in oblique photos.
I should really move this back to my cent build thread now - started under craftsmen market in case there were any ready makes out there...........
Thanks again
Kevin

These were taken at Bovington.
The lights are Parabolic with an external diameter of 8" and the lens is 7" and a depth of 6". The diameter of the tube is 3/4", so a satisfactory 3mm!
If any one wants me too I can burn these to a CD as emailing them is proving temperamental!
