Degreasing blind threads.

Post by Adrian Harris »

As part of an over haul, I've removed the sprocket gears from my Sherman final drive housing. The covers weren't thread-locked on, and some of the bolts had come loose, resulting in some damage to the sides of the final drive housing from the drive gears.

I'd like to use thread-lock when I re-assemble everything but it looks like some of the grease from the drive has contaminated the mounting holes.

What would people recommend to clean out these threads, so that the thread-lock has a chance to work ?

I'm leaning towards using an IPA (Isopropanol Alcohol) aerosol to get into the depths and then, after letting it soak for a while, to blast out any dirt and grease.

Adrian.

Adrian;

Use a can of brake cleaner. Don't use carburator cleaner because it has a lubricant in it. Good luck

Just watch your paint.
A lot of these cleaners will strip it a treat.

Good luck
