Kubelwagen Wood Floor Boards

Post by Mike Stannard (toyrific) »

Hi Guys

Here is a by product from my Kubelwagen Cold Start Set. I am posting these as I thought many might like to have them. I have been working on the re-engineering of the original cold start I made a while ago. I used a 1:35 scale model to make it and found that most of the work I had done was wrong. I was fortunate to have a customer send me a copy of a WW2 manual with all the detail in I needed to make this correct. Most of the parts I had made where close to correct, but lacking a lot of detail. This I am now correcting and should have all the parts finished soon.

Back to the by product. As you can see from the first picture that all of the cold start parts were stowed inside the KW when not in use. These were mainly held in place with clamps and fittings on wood blocks attached to the floor boards. To do this correctly I had to make a set of the floor boards. These are designed to fit the Dragon KW, I cannot guarantee they will fit other makes of the KW. They are made of basewood, which is fairly hard, but as the wood is only 1/16" thick the floor panels are fairly fragile, but will be fine once attached to the floor of the KW.

These are made to the measurements found in the manual, so I know they are correct. The cast in flooring in the Dragon KW are close to correct in the width, but are to long as you can see in the second picture.

It appears the rear seat of the KW was removed to allow space to stow the cold start, the driver and passenger seats had to be remove for access to the cold start parts, so these must have had some sort of quick release clamps to hold them in place for driving, possible the passenger seat was also completely removed and the driver seat was hinged at the rear so it could be folded back to remove the starter end. Unfortunately I do not have the correct answer for this. It may be mentioned in the manual, but I do not read German.

These will be offered as a separate part to the cold start as some may wish to mount the cold start direct to the original KW floor.
