Measurement help

Post by John Fitzsimons »

I was wondering if anybody has the measurements for the turret boxes containing headphones and microphones, and also pistil cartridges. These are the boxes behind the commanders seat. Are these present in the late Tiger also.

Hi Colin, your turret detail is excellent. Exactly what I was planning. mp40 is couple of mm too tall. Will need to shorten. I found that site recently but could'nt find dimensions of boxes. Using it at the moment to try make turret side ports. Curtsacs proving to find also. I only have two at the moment.

Thanks Mick. Saw those. Actually set of six but seem to be out of production at the moment. Still looking for box dimensions even though Colin beat me to it. Must be an Irish thing.

Hi John,

All is there at David Byrden’s excellent site.
http://tiger1.info/tw_stowage.html

http://tiger1.info/EN/TurretWallStowage.html
http://tiger1.info/EN/FlareStowage.html
http://tiger1.info/EN/HeadphoneStowage.html

Please note that the layout changed during production so on Late Tiger I almost nothing hang on the turret wall.

"In the final Tigers, as seen in the 'Saumur' vehicle [9] , the manufacturers omitted non-critical items to cut costs. For example, the position indicator was deleted from the cupola in February 1944 [7] . Perhaps for the same reason, stowage boxes were removed from the turret walls and replaced by open coamings on the turret ring [10] . This change was made before the 40mm roof was installed; it can be seen in one photo of a tank with a 25mm roof [3] ."

Kind regards
Kent

Colin and Kent, thanks for these links. I thought I had this site already but the one I had seems to be an old link. These links have everything. Lots to keep me occupied here for a while. Good to know exact locations in late model

You’re welcome John, just glad to be of any help.

One thing if you are aiming for a good looking turret inside.
Please note that the color of RAL 1001 Elfenbein was not white.

I have a note about it in my Hetzer saga in the Armorpax forum:

You might find it useful.

Hi Kent, the colour I have used is an ivory colour. I thought it might be too dark whem compared to some models I have seen. I will go for some interior detail. Making my rear mudguards at present then start on interior parts. I will try to make scale thickness blocks fot the viewimg ports also. Lots of ideas but need to learn some techniques. Good to get the correct layout but i hadalready made the rack for curtsacs

Hi,

I don't think RAL 1001 is the right colour based on that colour today, and it's not white, more a cream. Why, because I had to get some a week or so back. RAL 1001 is most definatly a beige using todays colour chips and the original colour is described as Ivory. Elfenbein is a colour still used by Volkwagen and also still uses the name and its not RAL 1001, not even close. The way we went about arriving at what I believe to be the correct colour was to find Elfenbein in volkswagen colours, then back match that to the current RAL chips. The number I ended up with is 1014. They all use a networked computer system to get the exact pigments to make the colour up and when it came back with the result, the colour name was ivory, so I was pretty sure it was as close as possible. Having now sprayed the inside of my tiger I am more than happy this is the right colour.

I also found that Panzer grey comes out as black, although the name is Schwarzgrau, it's black using todays chips. I went though all the grey's and even had some pictures on my laptop to use as a guide and we came out with RAL 7015 which in english is slate grey. It is a very dark grey, but not black.

I know that the colours could be any shade of anything, based on what was available 60 years ago, but I have matched the colours as best as I can to the inside of the Bovington tiger. Hope that information is of use to someone.

For accurate German colours, the Xtracrylics range of acrylic paints are very good. You can get them from Hannants by mail order. Both they and Liefcolour do an Elfenbein RAL 1001.

Just reading David Byrden's site again and read that the drivers vision block is 240 mm wide. This seems to make the slot in the kit far too wide? Any body got dimensions for the vision port? Could'nt find them on David's site.
