Anybody thinking of making the Canvas Mantlet cover?
As per the subject any...does anyone have any plans to offer this unique piece for the Comet?

Mantlet Cover
Bought myself a little Brother sewing machine,Practiced on an old T shirt
and made some paper templates and this is the result

Mantlet Cover
Hi Steve
The templates accept fot the side Ds were all rectangles so I thought that
giving you sizes and how I went about it might be better.
The side Ds were an E with upright 90mm and top and bottom of 40 mm
and turned into a D by marking the centre at 55mm and turning it into a D
with a pencil allowing for a generouse 10mm for hems all round.
I marked the matterial in pencil.
The front was a rectangle 280mm x 150mm with 10mm hems al round and
this allowed for the hem at the bottom to hold the front wire and up round the D and across the top,allowing for 10mm for overlapping the turret
front plus a hem.
I started by sewing the D's starting at the bottom allowing for the hem and
following the pencil marks round the bend of the D over and the top flat.
I then turned these inside out.
I ironed the hems flat and sewed the bottoms of the D and backs of the D
checking them with my template.
Next I cut my bottom wire to suit the bend at the front,the wire I used was the 1.5mm B&Q trellis wire,the stouter one but still bends easy.
The pockets formed at the bottom of the D's held the wire while I sewed
the bottom hem taking care not to let the machine needle hit the wire.
This gave the cover a bit of sbstance to fit arround the sides and get the
holes marked up for the MG square,main gun and gunners site.
The main gun position I did a 30mm cross at the centre of the D 45mm
and slightly set to the right because the main gun seems ti be offset a little
that way.
I cut the cross out and thsi went over the brake and when in position I
marked the Mg square and cut it out allowing for a little hem to be turned
back to strengthen the square hole.this was sewed up and into a square
hole.
Next was the gunners sit hole,I marked this arround the inside of the hole
and cut it out.
The template for this was 45mm x 12mm folded and ironed flat,I sewed
the 2 small hems each end first and then I had to sew it round the hole by
hand which was a bit of a fiddle.
There is not much of the site sticking out of the mantlet for suport,but as
I found out later a coat of acrylic for colour gave it a bit of strength.
I sewed a square arround it like in the picture for effect.
The template for the gun bit was 115mm x 30mm with a 10mm hem all round.
I sewed the hems allround and this gave a 15mm overlap which I was to
allow to be at the bottom of the gun.
Arround the cross that was cut I penciled a 30mm circle which I then
sewed to the outside of this line leaving the 4 triangle bits in place,starting at the top and finnishing at the bottom.
Then going in the other direction from the top and leaving a 15mm overlap.
this then slid over the brake easy to check the fitting.
The templates for the 5 top wire pockets were not scaled but judged by
looks and position from the pics.
I chose 70mm x 10mm and allowed 5mm alround for the hems.
after ironing all hems flat I sewed the edn hems the re ironed int a pocket and sewed to the cover.
wires were cut to suit and fitted inside each pockat with a slight bend put
in afterwards.
then the last top hem was done to give the 10mm bit to fasten to the top of
the turret.

That posting of mine above with all the spelling mistakes was my second
go,the first one I lost because I took too long typing it and it went back to
the loging on screen when I pressed preview.
any way the bit I missed off was,what I did with the main gun overlap bit.
I held it tight round the barrel and marked the end of the overlap so I knew
where it went and I sewed it into position so it was tightish on the barrel.
I had tried a bit of velcro but that showed up too much,I was going to try
to find a mini press stud but there were no shops open when my
decision was made.
The Barrel Brake comes off easy enough for it to slide on though and that is how it remained during the fiting of it.
I used 6ba bolts and that in itself was a whole new challenge with the
marking of the holes and drilling and tapping without detsroying the work

The sizes you give do they include the 10mm for the hem or do I add an

Yes my description wasn't too clear about that.
The 10mm I added all around to those sizes,which was plenty and
it gave it a baggy look and not too tight.

I used some material from an old blind to make a cover, it has worked well with just about the right weight and stiffness. If you have not got too far, I can cut a bit off, and send you my patterns for you to checkout as well.
