Late Tiger Build and zimmerite/painting

Post by Adam Buxey »

Hi guys,

My late Tiger build is progressing ok, I've got the hull to a point where I'm happy with the fit of the panels.

I'm getting ready to paint the inside and outside of the hull with etch primer and ivory paint on the inside and dukel gelb on the outside and I have a small query:

I intend to "zimmerite" my tank with Milliput or something similar, is it best to apply this onto clean bare metal or can you apply it over a painted surface. without it flaking off?

Any help appreciated

Adam

hello adam,

when i zimmerite my panther i primmed the complete hull inside and out in white really just to keep the rust off, then used milliput to zimmerite on the hull and turret, doing it this way you will need to just key up the primmer so there is a rough surface for the milliput to seal on to, the milliput goes off so hard you need to knock it quite hard to chip it off.
hope this is of some help to you.

helo again,

prepair for about 2 weeks work!!!, with milliput i got some grease proof paper cut out 2 sheets 12x12, wet the first sheet well on one side, get the milliput, thumb the two mixes together well, take the secnd sheet of grease proof paper weted on one side and sandwich the milliput between the wetted sides,, then roll it out useing a rolling pin not to hard so you get about 2/3 mm thick sheet of milliput doing it this way you get an even surface to lay on to the tank surface, if you try to roll it out normally it will stick to every thing, then thumb it down gentley on to the surface of the panel your working on, then i used the zimmerite tools that i think mike stannard was selling to make the pattern lines, do a sample peace first to perfect it, the milliput does start going off after about 10 mins so work quite swiftly, have a look in a few books to see what sort of pattern zimmerite you want or how it was done for real in the war, hope this helps, its quite difficult to describe writing it down.
chris.
ps i used about 5-6 packs of milliput on my panther, tiger should use a little less.

Hi Chris,

It sounds quite tricky, I'll have to have a practice or two by the sound of it.

I looked at Mikes Zimmerite tools, he's got three different sizes/pitches? which size do I need for the Tiger?

hello adam,

its not tricky, once you get the idea there be no stopping you, just learn as you go along, i did!!
i bought 2/3, 3 being the biggest pitch, i used 2 mostly on my panther, but if you look at pictures in books the tiger seemed to have a much deeper pitch zimmerite, so may be use 3 but have a play with both,

good luck, chris.
