Importance of primer

I've spent most of the evening dismantling the upper hull. Not particularly newsworthy in itself but below are a couple of pictures showing the importance of primer, especially between dissimilar metals,

The first picture shows where rain has seeped under the deck fittings and corroded the deck plate:

This picture shows the corrosion between the aluminium hull sides and the steel hull top, panniers tops and fixing brackets:

From experience, the rust marks will be quite straightforward to remove with wire wool and water. The white marks are where the aluminium has corroded and although it is possible to remove these marks, the metal underneath is quite deeply marked and in some areas pitted.

Thanks Adrian for the photos, very interesting!

In other words - Donâ€™t fully assemble the hull before priming (at least on areas there steel brackets meets aluminium).
Or any other areas were 2 different metals attach to each other.

My advice is also to use only (self)etching primer as "normal" primer donâ€™t stick to "odd"

metals like brass and bronze.

hi adrian,a good strength vehicle alloy wheel cleaner,or old car battery acid cleans these parts like new even if they are badly pitted,wash off with a liquid soap ,dry,and etch prime,the alloy parts only need a quick dip and not left in to sizzle,i've used this method often ,gives great results.

Really good pictures and it is the truth that 2 different materials fight...
On the other hand when i saw your fist picture i thought it was one taken from a real disassembled Sherman...

It looks like atacked by the elements a real battle warn Tank...
In the end not so good for the model...

, that's not something I had considered - never having had a car with alloy wheels

hi adrian,the wheel cleaner i have is very strong,more like a sulphuric acid,superb for cleaning parts,i.e. your wheel bogies.if you want more info p.m. me
