Early Tiger Sound Unit
Hi..I have an early Tiger 1 with a 2005 dated original Armortek sound unit. Can anybody please confirm how the unit should work?..When I turn the tank on at the main power switch the engine start up sounds are heard..This then switches to an idle after a few seconds..When you run the tank the sounds do not change?..Is this normal?..I read elsewhere that the sounds are not proportional but if this is true why is the sound unit connected to both motors?..The switched channel on the transmitter has no effect on the sounds and I believe that you should be able to turn the sound on and off remotely and have a machine gun sound?..any help appreciated..thanx..mark

Hello Mark
Welcome. The early Armortek Sound unit is Ok but there is a better one out there Benedini one.
The Early one is not proportional and only had engine start Run and shutdown and machine gun You should have it on a rotary switch or 3 possition switch on you transmitter.
You have to use Y leads red and white to reciever grey and orange to each of the motor rc leads. these go in the signal wire of the Rc lead which on the futaba leads is the white.
do not splice into the rc leads as this will cause intermitant running. best to use Y leads.
The early sound unit works but is prone to shutting down when you are at full thottle.
If you can afford it best to upgrade to a benedini system.A lot better and reliable. Hope this helps but if not give me a ring.

G'Day Mark
I also have the old sound unit in my early Tiger. The sound is as you described, with a very subtle almost indiscernible change in engine noise with vehicle speed.I am thinking of upgrading to the new system myself. If the sound I've heard coming from the panther is similar it will be worth it.

In view of the time and effort everyone puts into creating these Tigers is there not some merit in trying to obtain true Tiger 1 sounds rather than simply accepting the sounds of Maybach engines in different tanks.
We do ,in this country, have the only current running T1 on the doorstep and it has been recorded by all and sundry.
Is there no apetite for the real sounds for such excellent tanks. As static models the T1 is exceptional, as running tanks they sound like something else.
Maybe this is all that Benedini can offer, but surely with the known availability of something better and the extent of the market for such a product there should be an appropriate option available.
Just a thought.

Hi Simon,
This thread is about the old type of soundunit that was supplied with the first ever Armortek tank many moons ago. Maybe the word "early" has confused you a bit.
Since Mark and Gill took over Armortek they decided, very wisely, to go for the best soundunit available i.e. the Benedini unit. This unit reproduces a.o. the original Maybach sound in a fully proportional way.
Everyone on this forum will acknowledge the above.

Hi Ad,
Apology, my broadband has been causing me problems until lunchtime.
The wonders of technology
My comments/thoughts relate to the latest Benedini sound units provided to all large scale armour suppliers.
The recordings are of Maybach engines, but not ones fitted and running in a Tiger 1 . They are fitted in other tanks which is great news for those with a different tank.
As i understand it,no one has recorded and set up onto a tank sound system a T1 mounted engine. The true sounds of any vehicle come from more than simply the engine [ example - exhaust system ] and there is no one that i have seen or heard who has those sounds.
This is no reflection on the tank suppliers and Mr Benedini has said 'you supply the sounds and we will install them for you.
My question ; why is he not already doing this himself.

Hi Simon,
Understand what you are aiming at but the thing is that there exist no running Tiger I with correct engine today.
The Bovington one has a Maybach HL230 P30 engine, an engine made for Panther, Jagdpanther and Tiger II.
Originally it had (as one of the first 250 build) an Maybach HL210 P45 but it was cut up for evaluation during the war.
A correct Tiger I engine would be a Maybach HL230 P45 but obviously they are hard to find today.
The Benidini sounds are as good as we can ask for at present - sorry.
Cheers

Kent,
If you run the P30 and P45 engines on a bench with no exhaust you would not tell the difference.
Stick it in the tank, connect exhaust, filters, run transmission, etc and the running tank sounds are unique to T1. As with any vehicle.
131 would not sound noticably different with either engine. There are more influences on running sounds .
If on the other hand you believe this is not correct, that does not change the fact the sound unit suppliers are marketing their recordings as the correct sounds.
As the T1 sounds used are from non tiger 1 recordings this statement is not correct. I ,for one ,would rather mine sounded more like the recordings of a T1 fitted Maybach engine/transmission, but do also disagree with being told the sounds i have or can currently purchase are of T1. They are not.
Again, this is no reflection on model sellers.

Hello Simon
As far is i know that the benedini sounds are genuine Tank noises. The one in my Sherman sounds like a sherman. The tiger sound and the panther sound are very different on the Benedini ones. You can hear them on www.benedini.de
The bovi Tiger occsionately comes out and when it does it doesnt stay out for long im my eyes the Tiger engine wnats tuneing. There are some panther that sound 100% better than the Tiger over here.

Lee,
As far as i am aware, and it has been confirmed to me, there is only one Tiger 1 in running condition and this has never been recorded for use in model armour.
I am also informed that Benedini still uses running Maybach engines in different, available tanks, which as i previously said, is great for those tanks.
If you look carefully at Benedini ,the wording used is clever in that it assures one that the correct engine is used.
I revert back to my comments for a correct sound unit recording which makes a T1 sound like a T1 and not a-n-other type of tank.
There is no one providing a sound system with the correct sounds for a running T1 and therefore there are no running models which have the correct sounds for a running T1.
This i think is a shame in view of the time and invested interest in T1.

Hello Simon
I think that when the Bovi Tiger sounds a lot better and not a spluttering astmatic i think that Thomas will take a recording of it. But For Now its better than nothing. The Panther in my eyes is the Better of the two sounds
But as the thread was started that we were on with the early Armortek sound system which is not the same as the sound system that comes with the Kits now.And therefor has its own way of control.

Hi all,
I do not want to hijack someone elses link and so am not going to send any more comment on this subject after this message.
My point is that we have a perfect sounding T1 that i would love to have my T1's sounding like [ and yes, it does run well ] and i am astounded to learn that all suppliers of sound units currently have not worked with Bovington to provide this system. To add insult to injury they are selling equipment on the pretext it is correct for T1 ,but in the full knowledge that in fact it is not.
They do not lie, in that they only state it is the correct engine sound. It is ,however not the correct sound for a running Tiger 1 tank.
I am also bemused to see there appears no interest from fellow modellers to have the correct sounds and for those with T1 tanks [ of exceptional quality ,if i may say ] to accept thier T1 sounding like a Panther when the correct, and might i say , preferable ,sounds are available.
A distinctive sound was heard from the Tiger, and i for one would like my running model to have that distinctive sound.
As ever, i congratulate those modellers on the site, but that final detail needs to be added,
SF.

Hi guys,
Interesting. Not having the sound unit for My late Tiger 1 yet I have been following this discussion with interest.(even though it started with an early sound unit question).
What does the sound unit for the latest Tiger 1 sound like? Same as the Panther? The two sound samples on the Benedini web sight sound slightly different to me(although they are short samplings). Also, the Panther recording is of a late G Panther (mit Flammvernichter).
Comparison of the real thing for everyones listening pleasure.
Panther Ausf A (Jacques Littlefield's and Saumur)
Tiger I (Bovington)
Tiger sounds alittle "smoother" to me. Sorta purrs like a kitten.
All this being said, the sound on my Armortek Panther equipped with the Benedini sound card is AWESOME! In a perfect world, the only thing I would love to add is gear shifts somehow. But that's beyond me.
Regards
Tim
