Side stowage bin

Post by Jeffrey Goff »

I had a go today in making the large side stowage bin, I had the white metal casting, but from its shape, it took me a while to realise that it would have had triangular pieces to fill the gaps between the casting and the body, the after market bin also had these infills, not sure why, because when you check out the full size bins, they go right back to the body, and as a stowage bin it would be wasted space; I tried using some 99% pure zinc sheet 1mm thick, for the first time, and this is what I found, cutting is slower than mild steel and brass, and rolled sheets don't bend well with the grain, I read if you cut the sheets on the diagonal then it will bend, but I did not want to waste time or metal, what I found useful is that it does not conduct heat like brass and steel, and you can spot soft solder within an inch of the other joint, and it does not all fall apart, so all flat pieces zinc, and top and front door mild steel, still have the lower box with the two compartments to do, and all the catches.

Jeff,

They are very complicated boxes and realy well made. I've never used that zinc material but it sounds a bit marginal for bending. I like working with brass but some brass from the model shops is quite hard. I decided to have a go at a couple of bits on the Mustang's bodywork this weekend. It was restored back in 1992 but there are just a couple of places where the dreaded tin worm has attacked. Fortunately these days the MIG welders are so good that I've managed to cut out the bad stuff and weld in new metal without doing much preipheral damage.

Jeff,
Wow, really nice work on the bins! First rate job and huge difference between yours and the kit supplied one! I've never heard of sheet zinc, but we have sheet tin here in the US. Curious that it works differently than brass, since brass has zinc in it. The bins are a great addition to your 222. I enjoy seeing your progress!
Kind regards,
Bob

Hi Robert, the zinc is a useful addition for modellers, it solders well. so if you are fabricating from many parts its great, but I like to bend and form the parts, so will also use brass and steel.

Brian, all folded by hand

Jeff Hi

Could you please tell us what paint you're using for the external surfaces? It looks just right for a mid 1943 Pz III? Do you know which RAL number it is representing? Thanks. Outstanding model, your skill is very impressive.

Regards

Stephen

Hi Stephen, I bought the spray paint off German ebay, if you look at the last post on my rear mudguards section, it will give you the details, the colour I am using is dunkelgelb, mid war, but he sells a range of colours both in spray and in cans, he speaks English, takes paypal, and was quick in delivering
