Re: No 012 - Bedroom Build
Hi Andrew and welcome.
The turret wrap was a lot of work. I put the front gun frame in and it was not aligned to the opposite side but pointing upwards.
So i pinned the frame in the "twisted" side (still no aligned to the other side) by drilling through the front lobes and right through the frame lobes and into the turret edge itself *i hope this makes sense
I then pinned the top and bottom lug and worked the frame into the proper position using g-clamps and spring compressors. As it is pinned it twisted the turret wall back to the proper position by doing this. Then i pinned the other side of the frame with just a top pin when it was in place.
Its real hard work but worth it as it has straightened the gun elevation and closed the gap on the turret roof.
If this does not maker sense then im happy to go through it with you step by step

Re: No 012 - Bedroom Build
Hi Bob
I will be starting my Turret soon so your descriptions are great to know
what to look forward to and how to over come it.
I wiil di it bit by bit and Happy Thoughts in between, like John said earlier.
RE Zimmerit
I did a sample tonight on a bit of scrap steel and I used the Tile Cement as on my
Hull, but I mixed some DunkelGelb with it and it mixed and coloured up nice, then I
addedsome pva glue, like I used with sand for some of my Hull Dirt Texture.
The mixture was nice and creamy and didnt sag and a quick wipe with one Of Mike's
Tools and it lookaed great, then a wipe down with a screw driver for the lines.
It lookes good with the colour and I am hoping it dries out with a nice hard coat
like with the sand mixture.
Will let you know how it turns out and a picture.
Cheers
Phil

Re: No 012 - Bedroom Build
Hi Bob
Left my sample Zimmerit for about 24 hours and yes it worked out ok.
The DunkelGelb mixed in is a bit lighter because of the white Tile cement and the
white PVA Glue.
As I mentioned befor it made the mix a bit creamyer so was easy to put on the metal
and the patern went in easy.
More important the pva glue made it a bit harder than the bare tile cement, aswell as
poking my nail into it the little bits that you can get hanging over the plate and pick
off after its dryed, couldnt be picked off like the bare tile cement so a bit of
sanding would fetch them off.
I think the PVA Glue, aswell as making the mix creamyer, made it stick to the metal
when trowling on with no effort at all, made it harder and yet flexible enough still
to bow the peice of metal without the Zimmerit giving way.
The Pics below show the bare whit Tile cement mix I used on my hull, the Dunkelgelb bit
the new mix and the little blob to the left was my Sad little try at Milliput.

Re: No 012 - Bedroom Build
It's hard, brilliant. Does it chip, and will it take the paint??? It looks good.
You got to be a plasterer to get milliput flat

Re: No 012 - Bedroom Build
Hi
Looking good with the Milliput Bob.
Your patients is paying off
The tile cement with Pva Glue will take a good knock and your prize
paintwork will have been battle damaged before then
I tried a rolling pin but even with water I managed to get it to stick
to the roll and my fingers.
But with a bit of perceverance I managed to get a few flat bits the same thickness.
Keep going Bob,its lloking great.
Cheers

Re: No 012 - Bedroom Build
hello Phil,
reading your post about milliput and sticking to the rolling pin and you, i tried grease proof paper, try putting a sheet of this on the table wet well put the milliput on this then another sheet of grease proof paper again wetting then roll out with rolling pin until happy with the milliput thickness, then pill of carefully then you should have a nice flat sheet of milliput to work with,
cheers, Chris.

Re: No 012 - Bedroom Build
Hi fellas.
Done a lot of this now and I still think the easiest way with Milliput is to get it soft in the first place! put it on top of a heater for a min before you mix it then break off small pieces press into place, wet it with an old brush till you get the emulsion form on the surface, and then just spread it out with your thumbs! with leytex gloves or similar on if you wish and then pattern it.
This has always worked for me and I am not trying to be smart of anything but it just seems to me that rolling pins etc is just adding complication.
Hope this is of some use.
Cheers Paul

Re: No 012 - Bedroom Build
I roll it dry between two sheets of dry greaseproof with an old rolling pin. When the paper wrinkles a bit i take that sheet off and put back on and roll again. When thin enough I take off first sheet and take off the thin sheet of milliput with my paint scraper. Apply the milliput to the tank and use a wet scraper to Work the sheet in. Also thumbs. I have a number of scrape rs cut to size for the pattern i want to apply. Rotunda the čorbe rs slightly.
Now back to my animatronic figures.

Re: No 012 - Bedroom Build
Ok it's not a Maybach, it's not even a V12. But it is a metal 1/6 engine with moving parts.
By the time i have finished with it inc. new down-pipes, air-filter, head extension, moving bits around, aging process, proper compartment and mounting: it'll be a darn sight better than an empty space coz i cant afford the maybach

Mix milliput, as i was advised by others, wet both sides plenty, place on tray with silver foil on top, roll with pin, scrape off, put on tank, roll with serrated tool designed for putting tile glue on, insta dry with black/decker heat gun. BINGO
