To my amateur mind, can we assume that the earlier electronic (pre red) boxes are better suited to LiFePO4 batteries, due to them not having regeneration abilities?

No. It's been part of the electronics since the first Armortek branded ones:

this remaining pillar of ground had the effect of a rotary plate, indeed. I had better used this pic without the stone, but I didn't find it immediately. The pics originate from 2013:
