Considering the weather when we were waiting for the coach on the first day there:



I'm amazed at how lucky we were. Twenty minutes after this picture was taken were were out of the city and out of the gloom.

I definitely think that this was the best time to see the Ardennes countryside:

Looking back at the wartime photos, it doesn't look to have changed all that much.

The whole area is filled with small memorials, much like Normandy.



One of the problems with going on a coach trip is that there are so many things to see which cannot be accommodated in the itinerary. So you end up getting glimpses of things as you pass , such as this half track at the entrance to Stavelot:



We passed at least two Sherman turrets, without stopping

I think I recognise a Panther wheel at the back but I'm not sure what the other one is from - Sd.Kfz 250 or 251 ?

Some information for Formula one fans regarding Spa Francorchamps which is close to Stavelot. Part of the road (track) contained an enormous fuel depot measureing 6 kilometres long. Elements of Kampfgruppe Peiper approached this depot desperate for fuel but they were stopped by soldiers of the 5th Belgian Fuselier Battalion (Not Telly Salavas ) who were guarding the depot. They set fire to many of the front rows of jerrycans causing an enormous wall of flame ensuring that the enemy did not get any fuel.

A truly fantastic tour.
