Bob hi. It's a thermal blanket to insulate the barrel in order to minimise barrel droop. (Pause for comments....). When a barrel gets hot from firing, there can be differential cooling effects from wind and rain, which can reduce the accuracy at long ranges. I think the UK was the first to identify the effect but thermal jackets are pretty well universal these days. They were a pain because you had to remove the ones nearest the muzzle in order to remove the fume extractor for cleaning. They did the job though.

Great model Luc. Well done, although the .50 is a bit optimistic. I don't recall the UK using them as commander's MG although they were certainly common on US tanks. Great gun, still is.
All the best.

Stephen

Hi Luc,

That looks great :D
I wasn't going to get the smoke module, but it does add a little extra.
I like your mantlet cover, did you use any sort of pattern or just measure and stitch?
Also the aerials move nicely, were the bases scratch built?

Regards,
Robin

Hi Robin,

Thank you. :D

The smoke module is something great to have in your tank. I use it in combination with the Smoker Fan Control Unit from Adrian Harris.

The mantlet cover is made out of one piece of fabric. I just had to make the holes for the main gun and MG. On top I glued some extra pieces of fabric and the airbrush did the rest.

As I was building the centurion I wanted to give the three aerials their natural appearance.
They had to move gently in the wind and they also had to wave on the rhythm of the moving tank.
So I could not use the usual steel antennas but I found the solution in nylon antennas.
I made the bases for these antennas with my lathe.
