Looks like we have all got a lot of work to do, complete with little distractions.

Hi Björn,

I will do an Ausf H from 2Pz Division (the trident marked) #821 from Normandy.
The only bad thing with the kit is that it doesn´t have the cast idler wheel but I simply have lo live with that.

Cheers

I don't have the manual here, but do you mean the round thing between the wheels in this picture? If so, I think those holes are just for decoration to make it look more like the real one. That's one thing to improve if you are crazy about details :D

If you need specific images let me know and I might have one. I took about 170 pictures when I visited Parola tank museum and their Aufs Js in Finland 2 years ago.

Kent: Hopefully someone will make cast idlers, otherwise it was quite common to put older style idlers on H and Js. I'll try to make mine with my cnc-mill but the structure will not be so "cast like" as it should be. Same goes for many of the parts. Hmm.. maybe it can be etched somehow with acid? Or sand blasted..

Hi Björn,

Yes I have seen plenty of Ausf H with the welded type of idler but......
My choice had the caste ones

One way to have the caste surface is to do as I did the armor surface on my Hetzer described in the Panther part of this forum.
Will do that as I convert my Panther sprockets (work in progress and looking good so far  )

Cheers

They are just holes to stick bolts in as far as I can tell. The manual shows them but says nothing about them. Just shows the empty holes in all of the drawings.

Graham, those are air vents for the brakes. Just imagine all the aspestos dust coming out of them.

BOGIE BRACKETS

Post by Graham Ord »

I am endevouring to make the bogie brackets by fabricating them (see photos). They are held together by 6 M3 screws and one M6 screw plus the bogie arm pins as you can see. The circular front and angled 14mm thick piece also have a step to support. This also means the M3 tapped holes in the circular front piece have enough depth, 7mm, for strength. Has anyone done this before and do you think it will be strong enough? It also saves a lot of machining away of excess metal if you machine them from solid!

I'm thinking in the same lines, much easier to make the brakets in parts.

I don't have any engineering education though so I have no idea if it's strong enough. Maybe make them from steel and weld them if they are to weak

As I have allready made the separate parts in aluminium and bolted them together I may braze or solder them as an additional safeguard.

I turned a prototype wheel from rubber. Got a cart wheel from the hardware store in correct size and turned it down. Turned out quite nice, smelled alot though and I got rubber strings all over :D

That line cracked me up.

It looks super nice Bjorn! I'm really glad to see PIV stuff on the forum. Good luck with the next 31 road tires.

Kind regards

Tim
