Hello Everyone,
I have discovered a much simpler way to turn tank tracks black. I notice most of you prime them then paint them flat black.
When I built my Panzer tank it came from Armortek with the tank tracks anodized black making it simple to give them a coat of MIG track wash and I was done. The FAMO I am building came with the tracks bare aluminum. The tracks are rather complicated castings and would be a real pain to paint. While looking for a company to anodize them black for me I discovered Insta Black a cold anodizing process you can do an home. I bought a gallon of the recommended cleaner E-Kleen 154 and a gallon on Insta Black A-380. Not being familiar with this process I decided to hang each part from a wire and dip them one at a time in each product. I left the part in the cleaner for 1 minute, rinsed it in clean water and dipped it in the A-380 for 20 seconds and I came out a dark grey black. This is the color I was after. If you want a darker black just leave the part in the A-380 longer. I rinsed the part in clean water and hung it to dry. It took me a few hours to do all 100 tracks. If you had a larger tank and a basket with holes you could dip all the tracks at once or large batches. The anodized finish is very flat and takes the MIG track wash very well. I have never tried to paint tracks but I have to believe this is a much easier method.
Here is a link to the company:

I used about 200ml doing all 100 tracks so the sample pack they offer would be enough to do one vehicle and would be less expensive.

Verry good work. Thought about it as well. - Think that the tracks weathering at work

Re: Painting and Weathering tracks
Be really interesting to see how they age. I tried various chemical/electro chemical things without much luck, mainly because I had no idea what I was doing.
Great workshop!

Good to see someone has tried this process. I've done traditional anodizing years ago and not have to immerse parts in a strong acid solution is better.
As with electro anodizing epi's technical how-to paper discusses 'fixing' the finish with another product. Traditional anodizing fixing is essentially boiling the part to harden the aluminum oxide layer after the colorant has been applied. Have you guys done the fixing part; which product did you use?

Re: Painting and Weathering tracks
Thanks so much to Tom Miller!!! Just in time since I was discussing anodizing vs painting the tracks for my Jadgtiger!
I talked to an epi product salesman and we came to the conclusion of using the A380 Trial kit, but specifying the substitution of E-tec 504 for the sealant as the one included in the kit by default leaves a glossy finish.
So the process will look like the following:
1. Assemble tracks
2. Clean as per instruction using E-kleen 154
3. Rinse with water
4. Blacken using Insta-blak A-380 to desired darkness
5. Rinse with water
6. Dry
7. Subsequent paint / weathering
8. After all paint is thoroughly dry re-wet tracks
9. While wet seal with E-tec 504 as per instructions
I will do the track in segments then assemble those after blackening because of the smaller amount of solution.
Thats the plan anyway!

Re: Painting and Weathering tracks
Glad to see others trying this product. I just completed all the tracks for my king tiger kit. Cleaned, blackened, painted with MIG track wash and weathered with MIG African dust effects. Came out gorgeous. I do not seal with 504 like some are doing. No particular reason for this and the parts perform fine without it.

Hello Tom
Will the sample kit do a King Tiger or do you need a gallon of cleaner & Blackener
