Weathering Tiger I tracks

Post by david allgeier »

I purchased my Tiger I in 2003 and I have FINIALLY begun the build process again :D The electronics and radio have been rather time consuming but every thing is running in good order now. Thanks to the person who posted the wiring diagrams.

I've seen some exceptional detailing now it is my turn. Question: How are
some of you weathering the tracks?

Also are there any Tankers in Indiana, Ohio, or Kentukey, I'm in the Indianapolis area.

Hello David . Have a look at my tiger1 on this page . All I did was to air brush them with five small bottles of Tamiya XF 64 red brown with 10% humbrol gloss . Then when they are half dry I wiped the colour off the tops of the treads with a rag and turps . On the top side Where the wheels run only spray the out side edge leave the inside plain .David , It's good to see you are still moving along with the build ..I'm going to paint my Sherman tracks next week this way .. Dale

David,

I note that you have put the radio gear in your tank, so I assume you intend to run it. I did pretty much what Dale did to "tone down" the bright aluminium however, if you intend to run the tank over muddy ground and do a bit of mud plugging then I wouldn't bother taking to much time to get the right effects or weathering - nature and wear and tear quickly take over. As your tank is 2003 it will have the pre plated track pins, unless you have upgraded, and these will rust, so when my tank comes home like this I remove the tracks and clean them then put them in a bucket of diesel fuel for a day or two to prevent the pins rusting too bad and jamming in the links.

Somewhere probably in the old forum, is a lot of track coloring posts, some using the dipping method etc...But I can't find them now! In the gallery there is one picture of mine, just basically used acrylic enamel with several coats of clear flat over, using an actual track link as reference.

But it's true when you begin to run the tank it will get plenty dirty & the paint may very well sand itself off or be obscured by mud!
happy building,
John
